Jerrick Poole Headed to VHL

Defenseman Jerrick Poole officially declared for the Season 40 VHL Entry Draft this morning and will be looking to show the league that he not only has the ability to be a strong VHL player but that he can be an impact player.  Right now, much of the league truly has not thought twice about his declaration, likely assuming he will amount to nothing more than a replacement player.  With the amount of talent already in his draft class, Poole has a long road ahead to establishing himself among VHL scouts and to set himself apart from the rest of the season 40 draftees.

Poole has always been a big hitter throughout his hockey career

Prior to this announcement, Poole had played two seasons in his native Boston for the Junior Bruins of the EJHL.  He excelled as a shut down defenseman but after failing to garner much attention from NHL teams, he decided his best move would be to look towards the Victory Hockey League.  With a true lack of quality defensive minded players in the VHL, Poole is hoping that his style of play will help make him a hot commodity come draft time.  Following his announcement, Jerrick had a small press conference to help everyone around the league get to know him a bit better.

Why did you decide to come to the VHL?

It seemed like a great opportunity to take my game to the next level.  I love hockey and any chance to be able to play the game for a living is a chance I'm going to take.

Where do you see yourself going in the draft?

If the draft was today, I'd probably be one of the last players taken and, honestly, for good reason.  But with so much time before the draft, I know I can surprise people and I would boldly say that I'll be a first round pick.  With so many great players already in the draft, I definitely have my work cut out for me but I feel like I will be an asset to any team that takes me.

What is your biggest strength on the ice?

I would say that I use my body very effectively.  I have a natural advantage being 6'6" but because of this, I make sure I don't let my size go to waste.  I love throwing my body around and punishing guys out there but I also know when it's appropriate to go for the hit and when it might be better to take a bit more of a cautious approach.

Any Weaknesses?

None.  But really, I'd have to say that my offensive ability is a bit lacking.  It's definitely something I need to work on and will be working on.  My goal is to be the best player I can possibly be and I think I have the tools to become one of the best players in the league.

Is there any team that you would like to play for?

Right now, I don't really have a preference.  As I start playing in the VHLM and get to know the league a bit better, this will probably change.  But I'm not necessarily too worried about how successful the team is initially.  While it's always nice to go straight to a contender, it could also be fun to go to a team that's more of a project where I can be part of a core group of players that brings a team out of a bad situation.
