WESTERN EUROPE ANNOUNCES GENERAL MANAGER FOR S74 WORLD CUP

Wife of recently traded goalie Mike McKenna speaks out on family life, hardships in the NHL - Article - Bardown
Recently coming back into the VHL spotlight, Steven Smyl will be leading Europe in its quest for Gold

GLACE BAY, NS — With the 77th overall pick in the VHLM Dispersal Draft, the Miami Marauders announced they were selecting Phoenix Dawson, the newest player the Toast Agency is bringing to the VHL. This isn’t the only news for the Agency though as it was announced that Steven Smyl would be returning to the World Cup as the GM for Western Europe.

Western Europe is a team with some interesting talent, but overall isn’t expected that they will be fighting for the gold medal this time around. Smyl seems confident though that he can give it his best shot. With the roster announcement rumoured to be coming before the VHL Entry Draft on Monday night, Smyl was contacted for some insight on what the team was looking for.

“It has been awhile since I have been in the Manager’s chair,” said Smyl. “With Phoneix officially part of a VHLM club I need to turn my attention to selecting the most involved players in the league to represent these countries.”

Smyl most famously was at the helm of the Riga Reign for a handful of seasons, getting one Continental Cup win while in the GM role.

“This is going to be a fantastic way to dive back into the league. I’ll be honest when I say that I have been out of loop and don’t know the players as well as I did back in the day. This tournament is not only for me to show that I can still handle the workload of a Manager, but also help me get acquainted with the VHL players and agents once again.”

While the tournament schedule is still getting finalized, teams will be looking to figure out their tactics in the round robin. As seen in previous World Cups, anything can happen in the elimination round and Smyl seems dedicated to doing whatever it takes to make sure that Europe is set up in the best way possible to hopefully steal a win.

“I have been watching tapes for the players on the Eligibility List,” said Smyl. “There is some fantastic players that I know that I would be able to build our offense and defense around but it’s going to be those final spots that I really need to consider to make sure this team is as involved as ever.”

With more and more players declaring for the VHL, it is apparent that the country managers want to make this tournament special. With many players waiting for the off-season to pass so they can get to work for the next season, there is going to be a lot of attention on the bi-annual event. Is the VHL going to see any upsets or are the countries with the biggest star power going to be the ones that prevail? Keep your eyes on the World Cup over the next few days as the rosters get announced and the tournament gets underway.
