MOSCOW - Russian players are always amazing. I bet every hockey fan can name at least one Russian superstar that existed in their lifetime. Whether it be the likes of Igor Larionov and Sergei Makarov, Detroit’s Russian Five including Sergei Federov, future hall of famer Alexander Ovechkin or even the ever-dazzling Andrei Svechnikov, there has always been an amazing Russian to keep your eye on. And it looks like there might be another one to add on the list. Sigard Petrenko is an young, up-and-coming player born and made in Moscow and is looking to prove that he can be part of Russian hockey history. He is currently playing for the Bakersfield Condors in the American Hockey League and has done fairly well as a 20 year old rookie, getting 7 goals and 4 assists in 19 games. While he has always wanted to play in the National Hockey League, he has shown interest in joining the Victory Hockey League.

“Yeah, no team drafted me this year in the NHL. So that means I have 2 options. I could cry about it and quit hockey or I can continue working hard and getting better. Besides, even if the National Hockey League doesn’t draft me, I can always try playing in the Victory Hockey League. I mean, the VHL is just as big, if not, bigger than the NHL anyways so that’s always an option. Sure, I’ll have to worry about making the VHLM first but other than that, I think I might go to the VHL if the NHL doesn’t want me. I could even try signing with my hometown team.”

The young right winger has been playing in North America since he was 17, so scouts don’t have to worry about Sigard adjusting to the North American ice. This could also explain why his English isn’t half bad.

“I moved to Canada when I was 17 so I could play in the Western Hockey League. The Kelowna Rockets drafted me in the WHL draft so of course, I decided to take this opportunity. It was interesting to see how life was in Canada compared to Russia. And while getting used to the smaller amount of ice was a bit difficult, I eventually got used to it.”

Sigard Petrenko put up 47 goals in his first season in the WHL as a 17 year old rookie, impressing the hockey world. He had a powerful shot and a good aim. Whether he had a wide open net or a tiny little hole in the top corner, Petrenko knew how to put it in. However, there was some concern considering his assist count was only 14 that season. The next two seasons, he got a combined 97 goals and 23 assists. While his goal count was certainly impressive, scouts thought his passing skills were sub-par and that his skating wasn’t good enough for him to play in the NHL. While the scouts say he’s not good enough, he believes otherwise.

“Just more people to prove wrong.”
