Rookie Profile: Thomas O'Malley

The VHLM Season 39 Draft is close by and traditionally we take a look at each of the top listed prospects. In today’s episode we look at Thomas O’Malley from Boston, Massachusetts

Thomas O’Malley was the first player to declare himself eligible for the VHLM Season 39 Draft. Due to being one of the earlier prospects who decided to do this, he was allowed to temporarily represent one of the current VHLM teams as a Waiver claim. O’Malley got claimed by the Turku Outlaws when they were in second place in the Eastern Conference and started a few games as their first line center. While he did not play bad, the coach eventually shifted him to center the second line. During his time in Turku he lead the team towards a first position in the conference.

In only 23 regular season games we noticed Thomas O’Malley scoring 13 times himself while he also assisted 17 times. 30 points in 23 games is certainly not a bad start considering he had to learn to adjust his game to the professional level of the VHLM. While being primarily listed as a player who is known for his goal scoring skills he did not score as much as he might have expected himself in the regular season, so it is too early to tell if this is the kind of play we will see from O’Malley when he becomes more used to the level of play. What O’Malley did post a team high in is his face-off percentage, showing why he is playing as center he managed to reach a solid 55,88% of face-off wins, while taking more as 500 face-offs in total.

When the regular season ended we already caught a glimpse from the future in the play-offs. You noticed O’Malley becoming more confident with his own play and jumped from 1.3 points per game to 1.54 points per game. His 9 goals in 11 games made him one of the top 3 goal scorers in this year’s playoffs. He finished the playoffs with 17 points as he also picked up 8 assists, good for a team second behind Dexter Morgan who was a reliable force in the VHLM all season long. His scoring was not good enough yet for his team to pose a threat to the Yukon Rush in the finals, so it does become clear that O’Malley still has a lot to learn from a full season in the VHLM.

While training hard during his time in Yukon he has become a better all round player as you see he gained some strength, worked on his face offs, his shot, his skating, his passing. O’Malley is a prospect that is eager to learn and pick things up.

The question remains for him is which team will take a shot for him, while he might be one of the front runners for a high draft position, it might be best for teams to pass on Thomas O’Malley. If he keeps developing at the pace he is right now, he will likely be making the move to the VHL right after he is deemed eligible to join the draft. The upcoming year O’Malley will have to play on a contender and go all-in for what is probably his only shot at a Founder’s Cup championship.

Good rookie profile. O'Malley had a pretty solid time this season considering he just joined at the trade deadline. It's too bad that he and the rest of the Outlaws' couldn't pull off a big win against Yukon (just kidding). I expect O'Malley to go very high in the upcoming VHLM draft.

Grammar: 1/1
Just a few silly things here:

What O’Malley did post a team high in is his face-off percentage = What O'Malley did post is a team high face-off percentage,

playing as center he managed = playing as center as he managed

While training hard during his time in Yukon = While training hard during his time in Turku (but I can see why you would switch that ;) )

Appearance: 1/1
Looks good.

Over 500 Words? 1/1
Yup

Overall 8/8
