Ranking Reikkinen's VHLM Team Interest By Best Logo

Recommended Posts

The playoffs are in full swing in both the VHL and the VHLM, given that Sven Reikkinen aka "Baby Reik" decided to join the Saskatoon Wild, a totally non playoff team; there is nothing but time for the young defender to focus on what may be in S77. All things considered Baby Reik actually had a pretty good short stint with Saskatoon. While Sven is known more for his goal scoring, his skating and offensive instincts were on display in a short 14 game stint with the Wild. Sven put up 8 assists, 31 shots, and was a +2 while still managing a respectable 15 hits and 14 shots blocked. It will be interesting to see what interest Baby Reik draws in the S77 VHLM Dispersal Draft. After that totally justifiable preamble that in no way properly segways to this list, here is a Ranking of VHLM Team preference based totally on logos.

12-9: AKA THE MUD LOGOS!

12. Halifax 21st

Sven Reason: This logo looks like a professional rendering of a kindergartener's attempt at what a hockey team logo should be.

Devise Reason: IT'S JUST A FUCKING BOAT! LOL!

11. Yukon Rush

Sven Reason: This logo looks like a professional rendering of a local high schools basketball clubs logo. Also, is this local city obsessed with Nascar™?

Devise Reason: Logo is faded and the overall concept doesn't really fit well with what I think Rush is trying to imply. I've always liked Yukon and their team name but it's clearly time for a new look.

10. Minnesota Storm

Sven Reason: This logo looks like a professional rendering of a local lumberjack beers league hockey teams logo. Is that supposed to resemble the Greek God Poseidon?

Devise Reason: I've always liked the concept of this team but felt that the logo itself could be more pronounced to both indicate who he is and what you are going for. Like, if your going to do this a trident has to be on the logo somewhere right? Let's change this shit up already.

9. Saskatoon Wild

Sven Reason: This logo looks like a professional rendering of a ECHL NHL hockey club affiliate. Moderately passable, although what animal is that supposed to be...a puma?

Devise Reason: This has probably been one of the more consistent logos and team names in VHLM history. I just think it's outdated. When Ottawa changed to the Lynx they actually managed to get a better animal to logo themed branding. I think it'd be interesting to conceptualize Wild without the use of an animal, and see what you can come up with. We also don't have enough team names that are just text with effects around them too, Wild would be a good one for that.

8-5: AKA THE WORKING BUNCH!

8. Mississauga Hounds

Sven Reason: This looks like a professional rendering of a AHL hockey club as conceptualized by the Grumpy Old Men. Clever pitch!

Devise Reason: I like the uniqueness of this logo to be honest and the team name is fine. It's just in terms of the working animal names it really doesn't have the pop/charm of the others ahead of it on this list.

7. San Diego Marlins

Sven Reason: This looks like a professional rendering of a trophy designed for catching the best fish at Glacier Lake. This is a hockey club? Cool, sure why not!

Devise Reason: This team concept and logo always has stood out to me, and despite it being odd I've long felt that it still gives them a good sense of identity. Similar to the Hounds though, there are other much better animal logos so getting by on your charm only gets you so far San Diego.

6. Mexico City Kings

Sven Reason: This looks like a professional rendering of an AHL hockey team. That's actually all it looks like, so in that regard it's a big winner.

Devise Reason: The King concept on this is probably similar debated to the Reign concept in Riga but I think it plays. It's going for a leadership type and the logo really nails that vibe. I'd kind of liked to maybe see a hockey stick somewhere in their though just to emphasize the sport.

5. Ottawa Lynx

Sven Reason: This looks like a professional render of a actual animated Lynx so as to be used in some zany animated feature. The detail on the Lynx is realistic for a sports logo.

Devise Reason: While maybe not the "best" animal logo it's absolutely the second best one. You seriously get a sense of wisdom and grace for this Lynx that rarely comes across in logos. It's also a testament to getting some mileage out of an animal logo without making the animal look angry for edge.

4-1: AKA THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME

4. Philadelphia Reapers

Sven Reason: This looks like a professional render of a logo that should be emblazoned on the back of the leather jackets of the entire team, whom I'm assuming also run a MC in their spare time?

Devise Reason: The cool factor can carry you far, but only so far. Reapers is a good name and a good concept for a team in Philly. The logo itself works very well and as I mention above is absolutely cool. It's not being the most hockey of the top logos here is why it can't make the top three.

3. Las Vegas Aces

Sven Reason: This looks like a professional rendering of the actual Las Vegas Golden Knights affiliate club. It looks too fitting and on brand to not be this high.

Devise Reason: I think looking like an actual hockey clubs logo, fitting your team name and concept and being a cool logo all check enough boxes to rank you high. I feel like this is exactly why the Aces are this high on this list.

2. Houston Bulls

Sven Reason: This looks like a professional rendering of a Dallas Stars ECHL hockey club drawn by a local Houstonian whom was sick and tired of people telling him Texas wasn't known for hockey. Sidenote: Don't Poke the Bull.

Devise Reason: WHAT A FUCKING ANIMAL LOGO. I know, I know I said above about the stereotype of the angry animal but it's a fucking bull! It should be angry. Also, it's got a crazy awesome grey beard like it's some dnd Taurus. Nuff said!

1. Miami Marauders

Sven Reason: This looks like a professional rendering of something you'd see on the flag of a ship of actual 14th century pirates. Which doesn't make much sense because pirates wouldn't get anything this professionally rendered 14th century or otherwise. This is ranked 1 because I liked the eye patch.

Devise Reason: What I say above for the Aces works tenfold here. Given the concept for Pirates is one on the sea, it feels dated enough to not cause confusion. The overall color scheme and look absolutely feels like a hockey club, and the skeleton head himself has a good mix of menace/cool that just works. In short, Miami is the best logo in the VHLM.

 to the S77 VHLM Dispersal Draft and good luck to everybody!
