  1. Jakob Linholm Scouting Report

    Jakob%20Silfverberg.jpg

Jakob Linholm is an 18 Year old Swedish Left wing who played his junior hockey in the Swedish Junior League for the Stockholm Golden bears. His VHLM rights were claimed by the Bern Royals, where he is currently playing, and is eligible for the S37 VHL draft.

    Position: LW

    Age: 18

    Handedness:Right

    Height: 6'2"

    Weight: 210 lbs

Looking at his body of work in the Swedish Junior League, you can automatically tell that Linholm has potential to be a very good player but is a few years away from reaching it. He has always been seen as a project but one that paid off for the Golden Bears. He came in more noted for being a great skater but not much of a scorer. He was used mostly as an energy player because he would always work hard while on the ice.

After his first season, he spent the entire offseason working on his hands and scoring ability. The coach's noticed a difference in his ability and moved him up and gave him a more prominent role on the team. His point totals increased instantly and since then he remained one of the top scorers on the team.

    PROS

Scoring – As was mentioned above, Linholm has gained a scoring touch and has proven to be one of the top scorers in the Swedish Junior League. He has a quick release on his shot and has proven to be very accurate with his wrist shot. He has shown to be very creative with the puck and can beat the goalie in a variety of ways.

Skating – His skating is something he as always been known for and has a very smooth stride. He has an ability to get to top speed very quickly and can out skate most defenders. He also has the ability to get around defenders quickly and finds his way to the net.

Work ethic – All of his coach's agree that Jakob has a great work ethic and has always been one of the hardest workers on the team. He always strives to improve his skill and doesn't let a slump get to his head. He has an ability to just work through it and uses it as motivation to do better once he gets out of it.

    CONS

Doesn't use the body – While he does have the size to throw checks into opponents, he chooses not too and must learn when to do it effectively. While he can get around most, when he doesn't he can get checked off the puck very easily and needs to work on being able to fend of defenders when they get in his face.

Never Played North American Rules – Jakob has never played with the different rules in the North American game and will have to get used to the different ice surface. Tough to give a timetable on how long it will take for him to get used to the faster paced game.

Passing – While he is an average passer, it is not the strongest part of his game. He has been know to make ill-advised passes which can lead to turnovers. He has been working on improving on this part of his game, it still remains a liability at the time of this report.

Another thing to be wary of is that he does have the option to return to Europe if he decides to do so.

Blaine Olynick stopped 13 of 14 shots in the Royals 3-1 win over the watchmen

There's a reason to be excited in Bern after the recent victory over the Bratislavia Watchmen.

The Watchmen have been the powerhouse in the VHLM and have been the best team in the league so far. When the royals welcomed the Watchmen to Bern they had lost the previous 2 meetings 6-3 and 4-2 respectively. Not many people gave the home team a shot against a team that had only lost one game all year.

Royals fans were treated to a great performance form their team and thanks to goals from Henrik Hedman, Mikko Leskonnen, and Ron World Peace they managed to hand the Watchmen their second loss of the year and proved that they could handle the top team in the VHLM.

While he didn't earn a star for the game, Blaine Olynick had a game he will surely remember, especially since it came against such a great team. He managed to stop 13 of the 14 shots he faced and while the numbers aren't eye-popping, they were what was needed to beat the watchmen.

While it is early in the season, and while this game may not affect the standings when it all is said and done, the Royals proved that they can beat the Watchmen which is exactly what they are more than likely going to have to do to go far in the playoffs.

  3. One of the most difficult things that a new player faces when they make the jump from Junior hockey to the pros is getting used to the new, more demanding schedule. Having to deal with the constant media as well as the travels can be difficult for any player to get used to. It can often take a new player months to get used too and can be especially tougher for players coming from Sweden and other European countries. Jakob Linholm has been dealing with these challenges for the past few weeks and as expected, his play has suffered as he gets accustomed to the VHLM.

Since leaving Sweden to join the Bern Royals, Linholm has had to deal with the media as well as the travelling schedule and this has caused his VHLM career to get off to a slow start. He has yet to get a point in the VHLM and has been trying to earn more and more ice time on a royals team that is filled with talented players.

"Yeah it's been difficult getting used to everything. While playing in Sweden I never really had to do a lot of travelling and the coach tried to keep us away from the media so that we could just focus on getting better as players. It's been tough but I have been working on getting used to it and hopefully I can start helping out my team."

Of course, Jakob isn't blaming his current slump on the travelling conditions.

"Every player goes through a rough patch and that's what I believe I am going through. My play has just not been up to the standard I set for myself and I just have to improve. There are a lot of great players on this team and it has been tough to get ice-time but I have been practicing hard and hopefully the coaching staff notices and gives me the opportunities I need to play and help improve while getting ready for the next VHL draft."

While the start of his career has been slow, Jakob has a history of proving critics wrong. When he first began playing Junior Hockey for his team he was considered to be no more than a third liner. Thanks to his work ethic and motivation he was able to become one of the elite scorers in the Sweden Junior Hockey League.

The road to the VHL is tough and Jakob is just beginning on his journey. Getting used to the constant media attention and travelling is just one of the many challenges he will face as he strives to become one of the greatest Swedish hockey players to play the game. For most of his career he has been criticized and every time he has proven them wrong. History shows that Jakob will eventually break out of his slump and begin scoring but Royals fans, and himself, are hoping that it is sooner rather than later.

  4. The wait for Jakob has been a lengthy one but his rights have finally been claimed by the VHLMs Bern Royals. VHL.com managed to get a hold of the Swedish left winger as he entered the Royals rink to get his thoughts on joining the club.

"I am glad to be apart of the Royals organization and am looking forward to help contribute to their success. I am hoping that the city welcomes me with open arms and that my time here will help me improve my hockey skills and help me get accustomed to the different style of play within the VHLM. I am hoping that the coaching staff just gives me an opportunity to help contribute and play as many minutes as possible and hopefully I can catch the eye of one of the big clubs in the VHL while I am down here."

At this point Jakob walked over to the door to the locker room to find out it was locked. Looks like the rest of the team is already being welcoming to the eighteen-year-old.
