The New Fight Game: How An MMA Startup Wants To Capture The Sport's 450 Million Global

Many people know Greg Eagles from his time in the VHL. He was a pretty decent goaltender that won a few awards and a championship. Many people thought after his early retirement from the VHL that he would go and help coach his son Tom, who is currently a defenseman with the Calgary Wranglers.

To everyone's surprise, the rumor is that Greg has joined a MMA organization and will be competing in MMA events in the near future. This is a drastic change from Hockey and many have wondered what is going through Greg's head.

"Well, I was always into mixed martial arts and enjoyed watching it on TV after my retirement " Said Greg " When I retired I started training in Muay Thai and I have got to the point where my trainers suggested I compete professionally. I thought about it since it was a very drastic change to what I was doing before but I thought that it would be interesting so I just said lets do it"

Many of Greg's fans are worried that having only a few months of training will not be good enough to be a successful fighter and might lead to injuries that can't be overcome. Any injuries sustained could potentially prevent him from playing any other sports in the future. We talked to some of his trainers to see what they had to say about his decision.

" We support his decision and actually we are the ones that pushed him to join and compete in MMA" Said his head trainer " He is a very competitive and athletic individual. We couldn't believe how good he was getting with such limited training. We believe with continued training he can be a top notch fighter and it's always good for an athlete to continue participating in professional and organized sports"

We reached out to his son, Tom Eagles, as well to get his feedback.

“ My dad has always been competitive and with his forced early retirement from the VHL he needed something to do” Said Tom “ Martial Arts always caught his eye and he has been training pretty much 12 hours a day since his retirement to potentially be able to compete. He is now at the stage where we all believe in him and expect him to do quite well. While I probably won't be able to make it to his debut fight due to my teams schedule, but I will be cheering him on in spirit”

It will be very interesting to us, the hockey media who used to cover all Greg's games, to see how an ex goalie will do in a competition filled with some of the best fighters in the world. We only hope that Greg is as prepared as his team and family think he is. Professional fighting is no joke and should be taken seriously.

There is no word yet on who Greg’s first opponent will be or when his first fight will be. Right now, Greg is continuing to train with some of the best Muay Thai fighters on the planet and he is looking to continue to get better until his first fight. He has really been focusing on his kicking and clinching but will look to expand to other areas once he is confident in his first main skills.

We can’t wait to see how Greg does and what the future will bring for this ex VHL goaltender.

Review: This was a neat article and spin on a VHL related article. Goalies are their own breed of crazy, so one going into MMA wouldn’t be that crazy. The hockey media seems very interested in how Eagles will be in the ring, so maybe some updates on the future.

Good article, has a picture so I’ll give it 9/10.

Love the idea of giving your retired player a continuing story line! Thought it was nice and detailed. This media spot was easy to follow and extremely creative, hopefully well here more about Greg's fighting journey! 10/10
