Wranglers In Early Troubles

The season is underway, team chemistry is starting to brew and we have had a small taste of VHL hockey. We are just a mere 6 games into the season, and maybe with that comes a hint of what is to come. Although, many teams have early struggles and find their place up top at season's end. Nobody can say any of each team's progress so far will continue for sure. Players need to grow into each other after a long off-season, this off-season which featured the Super Cup. It could be said that with all of the new Super Cup line mates, teammates may be a tad rusty in these early beginnings.

For the Wranglers, we are 6 games in and they have fallen to 1-5-0. They began the season with 5 losses in a row, and only just won with a shootout win against the tough Riga Reign. Calgary put forth a tremendous effort in that win, outshooting Riga 45-24 and ending in a 2-1 result. With that win, Calgary's goal differential sits at a -15 which is easily the worst in the VHL. They will need to turn it around in a big way to get back into the mix of things, which is something many expect will happen. The season has only just begun.

Even their great goaltender Martin Brookside is having troubles, managing a 0.875% save percentage. This is not something to be expected of him, but the Wranglers are not giving up on him so easily. With a goaltender such as Brookside, you know he will turn it around in time. Currently boasting a 4.61 goals against average, there is nowhere else to go but up. One would have to think that if he can get some consistency, the rest of the team will follow in his foot steps. Elite goaltenders are known for consistency and determination, so Martin finding his 'A' game should be an interesting thing to see.

Another man who is struggling in Calgary is their centerman Travis Boychuk. He is at 5 points in 6 games, which is in no way horrible. It is not what people expect from him now though. Being the rookie of the year last year and having so many points, many fans are hoping for more of the same from him to come. It seems that if he can get back to the great pace he was on in the season before, the rest of the offense should catch up with him. As a sophomore in the VHL, it will be a tough time trying to repeat what he achieved in the past season. Coaches and their GM alike are waiting for him to explode.

Defense on the other hand has been a side of the Wranglers' game that has looked dull at best so far. With Tony Stark and rookie Koji Yamazaki on the blue line things should get better. Koji has nothing but amazing potential to be a key quarterback on the back end and Stark is helping him find his way in the big leagues. The defense on this team will need to help a little bit more on the offensive side as well if they want to win some games in the future. With so many goals against and so little goals for, both categories of play need to be miles better.

We are only a few steps into the regular season of Season 39, and being at the bottom is not unfamiliar territory for this squad. Travis Boychuk will need to bring his best to captain this team out of the basement if they want to make the post-season. There is still a long ways to go, so it is definitely possible.

Sowwy, it seems I have been abandoned this week.

Nice. The Wranglers have been struggling up to this point but with guys like Boychuck and Yamazaki, I think they will be just fine. I think Yamazaki was an excellent addition to the roster.
