Ben Aky is a 6’3, 180lbs defenseman that is currently playing for the Ottawa Lynx in the VHLM. He is eligible for the S79 VHL draft.

 

Pros
Ben Aky has built his game on a defense to start with. He currently is 9th in shots blocked and is most skilled at defending. He is also a great checker that plays with good skating and strength. Overall, Ben plays a gritty defensive game as he has 54 hits in 40 games.

 

Cons
Ben Aky has not been able to get his offensive game to get going as he currently has 8 points in 40 games. It is clear that he lacks in offensive talent and it shows as others around him have much more skill. His passing, scoring, and puck handling are too low and need to be improved if he wants to be more effective. Ben is more of a scorer than passer but only has one goal this season.

 

The Future
After talking to Ben, I got a much better understanding of what he wants to revolve his game around. He said, “I want to become someone that can play for any team on any line. This means I will build up a solid two-way game. I want to focus on being more of a scorer offensively instead of a passer. I think that with a strong defensive build I can get away with having a worse offensive build. I know I'm not the best right now, but there is still a lot of time to improve.” Ben has shown that he is hardworking and dedicated to making it to the VHL. Ottawa Lynx General Manager dlamb has praised Ben on his high level of defensive play and dedication. Ben says, “I am grateful that I get to play for GM dlamb, he drafted a great team and he is always around to help. We are currently in a playoff spot and I hope we continue to play well.” I then asked Ben where he wanted to play in the future. He said, “I just want to win, I’ll go to whatever team is going to get wins. I will play the least amount of minutes per game if that is what it takes.” Ben Aky is a player that General Managers should keep an eye on. He will most likely be a late pick but he can shock everyone with his talents.
