Will3 467
Well climbing the mountains was fun and now I am in India. Glad you could join me here. It allows me to continue my series analyzing team names for an theoretical VHL league in Asia. Today will be sometime a bit different. Many of the team names in China were based in mythology. However, the two team names we will be exploring today will be based in the natural world. It should be an great time so let's begin Mumbai, formerly known as Bombay, is a great megacity. Located on the southwest coast of India, it is the Financial, commercial and entertainment center of India. Its metropolitan area consist of over 23 million inhabitants. It is the home of many corporate headquarters and the Bollywood and Marathi film industry. Mumbai also has three World Heritage sites, numerous beaches, and two field hockey teams. I would introduce ice hockey to the mix by calling the franchise the Mumbai Monsoons. Naming a team after the rainy part of a climate pattern may be strange but their are some good reasons to do so. The first reason is alliteration, which is key to any good name. Secondly, monsoon can also be used for locally heavy but short-term rains, similar to thunder storms. It is this use of the term that besr translates into a logo. Lastly, while monsoons do happen worldwide, monsoon have their greatest impact in India. So much so that the term monsoon was first used in the English language in India. The impact of monsoons on the weather is critical for the growth of crops. It is a team name that represents something important to India. Delhi has been a capital of many empires going back to around 1200 BCE. Today, the National Capital Territory of Delhi is a 1,484 square kilometres megacity. If the satellite cities of Ghaziabad, Faridabad, Gurgaon and Noida, were factored into the urban area of Delhi, you would have a population of 28 million people. It is behind Mumbai in terms of wealth and is second in GDP per capita. Delhi is of great historical significance as an important commercial, transport, and cultural hub, as well as the political centre of India. It also has two field hockey teams and has even hosted the 2010 Men's Hockey World Cup. To introduce this city to the fantastic world of ice hockey, I would create the Delhi Nilgai. No that is not a type of elephant. It is a type of Asian antelope. It is around a meter or 3.3 feet in hight and can weight between 100 to 228 kilograms or 220 to 635 pounds depending on gender. While females and juveniles are orange to tawny, males are typically bluish grey and have small horns. This antelope is endemic to the Indian subcontinent, so much so that there have been calls to cull the nilgai. The nilgai were first introduced to ranches in Texas in the 1920s and the 1930s. They escaped and now there are wild populations in other places like Alabama, Florida and Mississippi and the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. They are also the state animal of Delhi, making it a fitting choice for a team name. That and the colors of dark blue, grey and orange are an interesting color scheme. That concludes our adventure into India and the teams that would make up the VHLW North division. I hav a unconnected supplemental article to finish up, but this is it for big articles. Hopefully it had been as fun for you as it had been for me. The journey is just beginning, however. Australia, New Zealand and Southern Asia all have locations worthy of VHL franchises. I will explore them all as part of the VHLW South. Look forward to it next week. I will see you then. Now I got to catch a flight. SpicyGecko 100
Great article! I love all the facts and little notes you included about the places. There are a few minor grammar/spelling mistakes but overall not bad. A picture of the antelope would have added a lot to it, you described it well but I would have liked to see it. Also a link to your other articles of the same topic would be nice, I’ll have to go digging for the other ones so I can read them. Overall pretty well written and great concept. 8.5/10 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/110720-analysis-of-vhlw-north-team-names-part-4-india/#findComment-883300 Share on other sites
MetalToday 266
I find this interesting and would be a good idea of tournaments or such. I think your article hits another note for the league and I want to read the other articles your have and will write. These places are not big into hockey, however, for the people who like it from these different countries it could give them an opportunity to play in their own contra as well. 9/10 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/110720-analysis-of-vhlw-north-team-names-part-4-india/#findComment-883311 Share on other sites
