He had struggled with alcohol and drugs for a long time. He was quite open about it. I believe he had recently come back from a rehabilitation clinic. I suppose he just didn't want to live his life with the tearing struggle of his addictions. A slave to them. Trapped by them.

*edit* I realize that Aladdin quote has been going around facebook but I believe it becomes much more meaningful when you put into perspective what he was dealing with in life.

I've battled depression since I was 15, and anxiety for the past year, so I know how difficult it is to deal with. But I've been able to deal with it well-enough that suicide has never been an option. But then again, dealing with these on their own is easier than dealing with it and addiction issues.

It's hard to believe that a man who brought happiness to the world couldn't find it himself.

Growing up I watched many of his movies (flubber, Aladdin, Jumanji to name a few) and good will hunting is in my top 5 all time favourite movies.

Hearing this was like hearing about the loss of an uncle.

It just sucks.
