Claiming Commodities - Part 2

VHLM waiver claims are the backbone and the engine that keeps the VHLM running. Through a designed system, anyone who declares for the VHL Draft must enter the VHLM through a VHLM Waiver Claim system as a initiation and trial period prior to the VHLM Dispersal Draft. Over the last little while, the VHLM has seen an influx of waiver claims and while not all will encounter personal success immediately, those players, as mentioned, are the backbone of the VHLM and will be the players we all talk about down the road. Last week we covered five random teams and their claiming history thus far in Season 39. Covered this week are the remaining teams and a synopsis of their claims.

Yukon Rush
RW Alexander Adams
RW Sachimo Zoidberg
LW Chase White
C Tanner Tavares
RW Eti Yoman
RW Shadhu Rathod
D Jamie Hill

Leading the VHLM in waiver claims are the Yukon Rush, the back-to-back defending Founder's Cup champions. Forced into a rebuilding situation after capturing their second straight VHLM title, the Rush entered this season planning to rely heavily on the youth provided through the waiver claim system. Surprisingly, the Rush have done very well for themselves on the backs of several waiver claims including the likes of Alexander Adams, Shadhu Rathod Jr. and Eti Yoman, despite the rebuilding attempt. Possessing minimal veteran experience and a roster with a glut of rookies, I would say that the youth has handled themselves quite nicely in Yukon thanks to the entrust of General Manager Gow. Participating in 29 games is Alexander Adams, who has 65 points to show for his efforts. Right behind him is Rathod Jr., who has 62 points of his own. Not to be outdone is Eti Yoman with 57 points, and Sachimo Zoidberg, who has an amazing 42 points in 19 games. The play of these youngsters bodes well for the future of the VHLM, as well as the depth of the Season 40 Draft. Not to be forgotten about are Chase White with 22 points in 13 games and Tanner Tavares, who has 10 assists in 10 games played. It is unsure at this point whether Yukon can maintain their stance in the tough North American Conference, but one thing is for sure; Yukon has several future stars on their roster that will be able to continue to showcase their skills and build upon their current draft status for the Entry Draft.

Brampton Blades
LW Emidas Blair
D Brock Weathers
C Shawndre Bovic
C Niklas Kurri
RW Mikko Koskinen
RW Bobby Ricky

There might be an inside competition between the Brampton Blades and the Yukon Rush to see who can claim the most players in a season. So far Yukon is in the lead, but there's still plenty of opportunity for Brampton to overtake their divisional rivals. The Blades have been able to add various Season 40 draftees at different junctures of the season. Leading the way in games played is Niklas Kurri with 38. In those 38 contests, Kurri has scored 6 goals and 11 assists for 17 points, but there was talk earlier in the week about the Blades parting ways with the Finnish center. Another name quicky gaining popularity steam is Emidas Blair, who has appeared in 11 contests, picking up 6 points and is a +7 with the Blades. The other waiver claims of Brampton's include Shawndre Bovic, Bobby Ricky and most recently, Mikko Koskinen. Currently, the Brampton Blades sit atop the North American Conference standings, one point up on idle Saskatoon, who have two games in hand. For these players to have the grand opportunity to play on a winning club only becomes beneficial in learning how to win at the VHLM level and to gain all aspects of experience from the playing time in the regular season, to the rigors of the playoffs.

Moscow Red Wolves
LW Matt Giacomello
C Marcus Eisenhower
C Griffin Simons

The defending European Conference champion Moscow Red Wolves have added three new faces to their roster this season through the waiver claim process. Having the most success of all three is Griffin Simons from London, Ontario. In 30 games, Simons has amassed 12 points and is a -8 in 30 games. The progress of Griffin is being shown and by next season, all the experience gained this season should go a long ways in solidifying his stance as one of the best young stars in the VHLM next season. Marcus Eisenhower, another centerman added by the Red Wolves, has done a lot of work off the ice, but is another player struggling to find his offensive game. Through 11 games, Marcus has only recorded 1 goal, but has been a steady member in the practice facilities. As long as Marcus continues that off-ice work, it's only going to be a matter of time before he see's the results stemming from that. Lastly we have left winger Matt Giacomello from Vancouver, British Columbia. Having played in 2 more games than Marcus, Matt is also having difficulty producing, only securing 2 goals and 1 assist in 13 games. Whether it's a result of line mismanagement or a lack of a commitment off the ice, the VHLM is a tough road to travel through because of it's inconsistency and heart-breaking nature. All three of these players are expected to be names echoed at the VHL Draft and will be able to showcase their true talents with a full schedule of work next season.

Bern Royals
D Ed Grrr

The Bern Royals haven't been active members in many transaction departments, including waiver claims this season, but they did add Ed Grrr to their roster earlier in the season. Standing at a massive 77 inches and weighing a solid 225 lbs., Ed Grrr brings a physically imposing proposition to the ice surface. The United Kingdom native has been a revelation to the Royals back end in a season where the European Conference has been a complete toss-up. Paired with Jordan Cousins, Ed has scored 7 goals and added 21 assists for 28 points in 39 games. The one area of concern for Ed Grrr would have to be his defensive game, which as a result of a lack of attention, currently sits at -20 on the season. Ed Grrr is ranked for the S40 VHL Entry Draft, but will most likely be a late round selection.

Saskatoon Wild
C Oskars Harumpf

With a roster chalked full of players, there isn't a whole lot of extra room to add many waiver claims, but the one player that the Saskatoon Wild did add has been a gem off the ice and a work in progress on the ice. While the results haven't developed like Oskars would have wanted, he needs to understand that he is still an important part of the team and is a player that come playoff time, will be a key component. Goal-scoring has been an issue and the points have been hard to come by, but in the 10 games played, Oskars has only collected 2 goals but is getting a chance to play in all different situations, preparing him for next season. Currently, the Great Dane is situated centering the 2nd line, and with the addition of Ashton Galbraith to that line, the points should start coming for Oskars.
