2020 Montreal Canadiens Top 25 Under 25: #5 Mattias Norlinder - Eyes On The Prize

Pros:

Shooting: Tomas Søgaard poses a lethal wrist shot, considered one of the best in his draft class for his raw goal-scoring abilities. Tomas has a unique release, one that is both extremely quick and unpredictable. Scouts seem to be most impressed with his effortless form, drawing comparison in his shooting style to former Seattle / Helsinki / Malmo superstar forward Matt Thompson. Tomas Søgaard likes to play the left half wall in the offensive zone, often trying to find space and the right opportunity to find the puck at his well-known spot. Known for catching the goalies off with his frequent creative tricks and short-side shots, Tomas really plays by the rule of shoot first think later.

Skating: Tomas Søgaard’s exceptional lateral edgework is what makes him so lethal on the left-half way. The ability to weave in and out of defenders, often catching the defender flatfooted, rocketing past the outside and aiming high shortside. Alongside his edgework, Tomas Søgaard’s explosive acceleration is another strength. His 6’1” frame and long, powerful strides allow Tomas to create distance between himself and those around him. Often breaking out at the blue line in the defensive zone, giving the opportunity for a breakaway.

Puck Handling: When not shooting, Tomas Søgaard is probably trying to stickhandle his way into space, trying to set himself up for a scoring opportunity. What makes Tomas’ puckhandling so strong is his ability to keep the puck on a string while in the offensive zone, allowing for the ability to create chances out of nothing. This creative talent makes him a wonder to watch when he is on the ice.

Cons:

Discipline: Passionate about the game of hockey, and uneven in his emotions, the young Danish native has much to learn when it comes to discipline. Frequently he will be seen taking foolish penalties, both out of retaliation, and lack of effort in back-checking. This can often put his team in a man-down situation and makes it difficult for his team to claw back in close games where they are losing.

Consistency: A serious con of Tomas Søgaard’s game is his lack of consistency. In his most excellent moments, he will look like a superstar who controls the tempo of the game on his stick, and is able to make turn the tide in a game in the blink of an eye. Comparatively, other times, he will look lost when facing a stronger calibre team, and when his team is not in possession of the puck for a long duration of time. Scouts may take their time to see how consistent Søgaard really is.

Passing: The shoot-first-think-later mentality does not bode well for his passing. Growing up in the Danish youth system, and not surrounded by the most talented of players, Tomas often had to take matters into his own hands and will his team to win. His goal-scoring ability is what got him to this point, however now he has no choice but to utilize his teammates more, as he’s coming in as the youngest player on the roster, surrounded by other respectively talented stars.
