Background:

Malum Maellard is a lanky defenseman from Denmark who was signed by Houston Bulls off of waivers in the middle of Season 82.  Maellard played 3rd and 4th line minutes, only amounting to 16 games total in which he only amassed seven points.  He had a good defensive line overall but was ineffective in getting the puck to his teammates for scoring opportunities.  Finished the season with a minus-8 rating over 19 playoff games.  Scouts recommended that he stay in the VHLM the following year to further develop his overall game.

VHLM Career:

An offseason of work in the weight room to fill out his body proved to be helpful, however there is still work to be done.  Malum was drafted 8th overall to the San Diego Marlins, which surprised many simply due to the fact that he had such a small body of work to form an opinion on.  Malum has started Season 83 with second line minutes on a powerhouse Marlins roster that includes 4 of the top 10 practice hour earners in the entire league.  Not to be overlooked, Malum seems to have reformed his game early on and definitely has found an offensive “sweet tooth”.  Averaging a point per game, it is certainly within the realm that the defensive defenseman nears the century mark with some good luck.

Scout A: We would like to see (Malum) Maellard get back to his roots and focus on his defense a little bit more.  Scoring is rampant in the VHLM, but the defense is hard to come by.  If Malum is going to hear his name called early on in next year’s VHL Draft, he would be wise to focus on what his game has always been; defense.  While some goals here and there are okay, you really need to focus on that in order to be successful in the VHL.

Scout B: What a gem San Diego found.  We say that with a smirk on our face, obviously.  He (Malum) has been what San Diego expected at the 8th overall pick; sturdy, reliable blue liner with the occasional stoke of luck on the offensive end.  As he goes, I would say, just keep it up!

Scout C : I honestly don’t… get Malum.  A defensive defenseman without many hits?  Way too low on his team’s list for shots blocked.  While the assists are nice, that isn’t what his ‘game’ is about.  So what are his goals this season?  That will tell a lot to teams and where they draft him in Season 84.  The defense is there and that is clear, but we can’t tell how his game ultimately is going to develop when he is going in too many directions that deviate from how he wanted to build his game.
