Cologne Express Season 39 Report Card

This is part two of the Cologne Express Report Card article (with less actual grades than ever!), where we take a look at at how this season went for each individual player on the Cologne Express. We hope you enjoy the article!

Kez Kincaid

It doesn’t happen too often that a rookie plays in both the VHL and the VHLM within one season, they usually either stay up for the full 72 games or get an extra year in the minors. Kez Kincaid however didn’t just split his season between the two leagues, but also between a total of three teams: He played 31 games for the Cologne Express and, after being sent down, another 17 for the Turku Outlaws and 25 for the Saskatoon Wild. For a player that was still under the 175 TPE cap he had a fairly successful start to his VHL career with 14 points and a +9 rating, but ultimately the Express decided that he would benefit more from playing a bigger role in the VHLM. He settled in nicely after being sent down, scoring 34 goals and racking up just as many assists while also playing a great power forward game, showcased by his 110 Hits in just a little over half a season.

Logan Laich

Haha, Logan Laich, he sucks right? Wrong! This season the power forward finally started to prove people wrong and show that he isn’t just a grinder, but a player who can be one of the offensive leaders on a team as well. He had a true breakout year that should have him in contention for the award for most improved player and he did all that while also being the best defensive forward on his team. His 350 hits and 55 shot blocks might be even more impressive than the 69 points he put up, as is the consistent pace with which he produced even after the teams top forward David Collier had been traded.

Mattis Trumbauer

Mattis Trumbauer is another cap dump that the Express acquired during the season and just like Cody Inko, he just finished his last year in the VHL. The defenseman who was acquired from Calgary played even better than Inko with 40 points in 51 games for the Express - but that was mainly in the offensive zone because on the other hand, he was a team worst -25. Trumbauer still put up a very respectable number of shot blocks (196 for Cologne and Calgary combined), but the very unphysical nature of his game (only 61 hits) hurt his effectiveness in his own end.

Ron World Peace

He is only a sophomore, but Ron World Peace is already considered one of the most consistent and reliable players on the Express. The Defenseman is steadily improving and he just had a very solid season with 62 points, 202 hits and 175 blocks. After the Edwin Encarnacion trade he had to take on a lot of responsibility, being the team’s highest TPE defenseman, but he seemed to thrive under the pressure and didn’t let it bother him at all. With Mason Richardson and Nicolas Caprivi being rumored to be coming to the Express within the next few drafts things could get a lot more crowded on the blue line, but by now World Peace has shown that he can both be a complimentary piece and a leader, so he should have no trouble fitting in.

Steve Tremblay

Steve Tremblay was probably the quietest rookie for the Express this season, but that doesn’t mean that his season wasn’t good. He only put up 26 points in his first VHL-season but was very consistent in his training efforts and continued to improve throughout the year, which should make him a prime candidate for a breakout season in S40. With both David Collier and Giygas being gone now there might be an opening on the first line that Tremblay could fill, and he should really benefit from the extra ice time and quality linemates, something that he didn’t have this season.

Cologne had a great year, with the exception of Vlasis, screw that guy. I think the Laich trade was a great move since you were paying for not just the player in the sim but the member on the team and in the LR. Cologne has a bright future ahead of them and I look forward to battling you guys for European glory :)
