Claimed:Historic MS: Frank Trades Like a Madman for Three Seasons

Wheelin’ and Dealin’

The Wolf Pack is a bit bigger and stronger for Season 40. General Manager Frank Chadwick has had a roller coaster few seasons since taking over the Quebec City Meute for Season 37, starting with a historically awful 8-58-6, working back up to a 47-24-1 second-place finish in the conference, and culminating in a league worst 13-55-4 Season 39 record. The upcoming season could continue the trend. Every With a revamped roster filled with young talent at every position and some veteran leadership that might just be Dynamo 2.0, the Meute look poised to make a splash.

And this Season 40 team is most definitely the product of Chadwick’s vision. Every single roster player on the S40 Meute (save Chadwick’s own Aksel Thomassen) has been the product of a trade that he executed – starting with his very first trade just before Season 37. In other words: Frank flips trades like it’s nobody’s business.

The Core Players

Frank has assembled young talent at every position on the Meute, including Konstantin Azhischenkov and Aksel Thomassen at Center, Bruno Wolf and Azi Ali on the wings, Koji Yamazaki and Lauris Prikulis on the blue line, and Brock Waldron in net. Quebec mortgaged the inherited S36 lineup to build for the future, which is reflected in Frank’s very first trade:

(S30) RW - Roberto Martucci

S38 QUE 2nd (LW Josh Bennett)

This would set up the dominos to fall. None of the elements of this first trade are present on the Meute roster, but it would be the first in many transactions to get to the S40 lineup. Perhaps the smallest part of this trade would be bundled into a big move for Frank.

S38 QUE 3rd (C Forrest Josef)

In just two trades, Frank secured a potential franchise goalie in Waldron and promising winger Miller (who would later be flipped). The next two trades involved aging Meute veterans in return for more flexibility in the future:

(In BOLD are Frank’s acquisitions that are later used in another trade.) After Season 38 Frank was probably described as more “madness” than “method”, but as we continue to follow these trades to the final product, the method starts to emerge. Starting with Waldron, the core of young players comes together.

Seattle reclaimed its 3rd pick in exchange for a 2nd, which would later be packaged to Riga.

Sending Seattle their S39 3rd turned Frank’s trade into Tomas Valiq for S41 SEA 2nd. The S38 Preseason would add two more members of the core (Ali and Azhischenkov) and set up the most massive trading deadline in years.

Frank shipped out several of his assets at the deadline to acquire two more core players in Prikulis and Yamazaki – the end result of two seasons of wheeling and dealing. And to add icing on the cake, he made a trade per day in the offseason, starting with the last piece of his core:

The Veteran Leaders

Once the core had been established, Frank went to work on rounding off the roster with skilled veterans. Three more trades during the S40 offseason brings us to the current roster.

Fun facts!

Total number of pieces involved in acquiring Yamazaki: 22 players/picks through 7 trades over 3 seasons.

Quebec currently has only three draft picks currently: S42 QUE 1st, S42 COL 1st, S42 QUE 3rd

Total number of players/picks affected by Frank's trading: 35 through 14 trades over 3.5 seasons.

There are only two team that Frank has never traded with: the New York Americans and Toronto Legion.

Number of assets flipped from one trade to another: 7

Overall, very few roster players who weren’t retiring were traded out and a host of fresh blood brought in at the cost of a depleted pick pool. What we see here is a GM who wants a shot at winning now while retaining a young core, and who clearly doesn’t like drafting and really, REALLY likes trading.

Nice look into the trades that Frank made. That Richardson deal might be good, but I don't have a vast knowledge of this league yet. Pretty historic I guess. 1154 words, very nice.

Grammar: 2/2

S42 QUE 1st, S42 COL 1st, S42 QUE 3rd - S42 QUE 1st, S42 COL 1st, and S42 QUE 3rd

Nice color and images!

Final: 6/6 *2 = 12/12
