David Jokinen Prospect Scouting Report

The VHLM season has ended and throughout the whole season, playoffs and regular, many San Diego Marlins fans may have noticed a certain man in all of the Marlins games. This man wore a purple jacket, shirt and a hat. He stood out of the crowd during intermissions. Some may have also heard him talk in a strange Germanish sounding English accent.

That man was indeed a scout! Can you guess hired by who?

David Jokinen plays a very smart game, highlighted by his defensive skills.

Strengths: Defense, puck handling and strength.

Weaknesses: Skating, hitting, shooting

At 6’6 and 225 pounds David Jokinen is an intimidating sight on ice. Jokinen’s tall frame allows him to keep opposition forwards at bay with long and strong stick checking. His pure size lends into his strength. Jokinen is a strong player on the ice, with or without the puck. With strength and size alone, he can dominate over other players and it’s something he is aware of and does well too.

Jokinen’s skating is a weakness. He can be caught making mistakes in this department too often, but he is a highly intelligent player, seemingly always in the right position in defense. This brings us to his defensive game. In defense, Jokinen is always calm and making the right decisions, meanwhile lapses of judgment do happen, this is something he will work on. Jokinen is also something of a natural at blocking shots, he cooperates with goalies well, making correct decision on when and where to block or not.

David Jokinen is a very capable offensive defenseman, but despite this he has a lot of room improvement, like any young aspiring player. His shot from the point is not very accurate in general and yet he likes to shoot more often than not, this was evident through the fact that his shots were blocked or missed the net many times. And in the VHLM he was able to cover it via just shooting a lot more. David clearly prefers shooting over passing. David’s passing is adequate, his passing in transition is not good enough. His opening pass from the own end is not good enough.

It’s not all cons on offense. Jokinen is a skilled puck handler, although nothing revolutionary. The way Jokinen uses his long stick as an advantage is a huge factor in his game. He stickhandles like it’s a normal size hockey stick.

End report.
