Cologne Remains Strong

It's been a interesting, but rough start for the new look Cologne Express this season. After acquiring some players last year and saying goodbye to others, the Express made a huge splash in the off season to bring in the two most highly touted draft prospects in Mason Ricardson and Thomas O"Malley. They even went further and acquired sometimes superstar Wesley Kellinger and the highly underrated defender Andrey Zadorov.

Despite the acquisition the Express find themselves playing .500 hockey currently. Some of that can be attributed to their tough schedule. They have seen a lot of teams like New York and Riga thus far this season. Even the "weaker" teams that they have seen have mostly been Davos, a team with an elite goaltender still manning the pipes.

However not all of it is at the fault of the tough schedule. Cologne could be a better team, and while they are still so young they do have some areas to improve on. Despite the struggles, the team has remained strong. The core group feels like they are in fact a playoff team this season, and will prove it when push comes to shove and the dust finally settles. After going through a few line changes this season the offense seems to have finally started to gel for the Express, and they've even picked up some big wins against big teams.

At the end of the day it is still early. The continued relevance of the Vasteras Iron Eagles thanks to performances from Nicklad Lindberg and Eggly Bagelface have kept the European race alive and pumping. A race that depending on what happens leading up to the trade deadline, could extend near the end of the season. With so much hockey left to be played, it'd only be a fool who counts the Express out already.
