The Bern Royals had a good start to Season 40 and surged out to an early lead in the European Conference of the VHLM. Led by an all-star cast, the Royals looked set to continue their dominance of Europe by clinching the conference in two consecutive years. However, the second quarter of the season has been rough for the Royals, seeing them fall down to 3rd place in the conference. Strong play from Oslo and Bratislava coupled by a string of sub-par performances by the Royals have pushed them further away from repeating last season's Conference Championship.

Despite the recent struggles the rest of the season is very optimistic for Bern. Several off-season acquisitions have shown great improvement in their game since coming into the league. The Season 40 Dispersal draft saw the Royals add defencemen Jaime Hill and Nicklas Karlsson, who both have subsequently become team captains shortly into the season. Their presence has greatly improved Bern's defensive core coming off of last season's embarrassing playoff loss to the Oslo Storm, where the Royals conceded 27 goals over 4 games.

Another player the Royals are looking to be a big contributor over the second half of the season is right-winger Kyle Kingma who was claimed by the Royals on waivers and looks to be an excellent prospect. He has the skill set to provide some much needed secondary scoring behind the VHLM's most dominant offensive force, Jody 3 Moons.*

The Royals will need to buckle down and ensure their small mid-season slump does not continue for much longer if they want to see themselves finish at the top of the European Conference and earn the coveted first-round bye.

* Jody 3 Moons is indeed better than Sachimo Zoidberg of the Bratislava Watchmen as confirmed by VHL Blue Team.
