VHLM Career

Zyn Westwood recently wrapped up his first professional season in the VHLM. It was one that was very eventful for the young star out of Monaco as he was traded at the deadline and then went on the win a VHLM championship with the Philadelphia Reapers in a dramatic Game 7. The season was a success from a team perspective, but for Westwood he struggled at times adapting to the VHLM game. During his time with the Las Vegas Aces he tallied 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points in 41 games played. After being traded to Philadelphia at the deadline he started finding more of his scoring touch adding 12 goals 11 assists for 23 points in just 27 games played. He would carry that offensive momentum into the postseason where he was a point-per-game player in the Reapers 19 game championship run. Overall, it was a very solid VHLM career and season for Zyn Westwood.

Strengths

Goal Scoring

Westwood has always been a pure goal scoring winger in his hockey career. Dating back to his days in the NCAA he was setting records for most goals on the team season after season. We started to see this goal scoring touch in the VHLM playoffs and even more so in the recent Junior Showcase Tournament where he finished Top 3 in goal scoring amongst all players. His scoring ability is not hinged too much on his shot, but rather his complete game and ability to be in the right spot at the right time. If he is going to have a successful VHL career one day, he will need to continue putting the puck in the back of the net.

Two Way Game

In addition to his elite scoring potential, Westwood is also very reliable in his own end and prides himself on being responsible defensively. In his VHLM career he was frequently on the teams first penalty kill unit and being tasked with shutting down the other teams top offensive weapons. He is also not afraid to throw his body around and make some big hits to open up the ice for his teammates. He finished the VHLM regular season with 121 hits.  His combination of goal scoring and defensive prowess is a recipe that VHL GMs should be licking their chops over.

Draft Projection

We’re just about a week away from the S89 VHL Draft and the first round selection order is now set in stone. There are quite a few very solid prospects in this draft that Westwood has been competing with all season, but as we stand today it appears he is locked in to a first round pick. VHL draft experts have predicted him going as high as fifth overall to as low as twelfth overall. We’ll find our where his home will be in just a few days.
