Goodbye Royals, Hello Opportunity

As the trade deadline has come and gone, we saw the Bern Royals make two very high profile trades, unloading two of their star players, Jaime Hill and Jody 3 Moons. In return for the two, the Royals received Oslo's 3rd round pick in season 41 and their 2nd and 3rd round picks in season 42, and a first round pick in season 41 from Bratislava respectively.  While this initially was seen as a drastic move by some in the league, as well as causing issues with 3 Moons due to administrative issues preventing him from playing four games, the uproar has largely died down. Bern General Manager Jaladolar has unfortunately faced some criticism because of these moves, both from 3 Moons and from others in the league who feel that he did not receive as fair of a return for Hill as he did for 3 Moons, while others have praised the trades as completely beneficial for all teams involved. We decided to speak with one of the players affected most by the trades now that emotions have cooled to get her thoughts on the trades, and the future of her career.

Jaime Hill on GM Jaladolar and her own trade

“When Jaladolar first came to me and asked me if I was willing to be traded, I didn't know what to say. Part of me was very hesitant as I've yet to spend a full season in the VHLM, and I had been hoping to spend it with one team after being picked up on waivers by the Rush and then having to leave them. On the other hand I try to put the needs of the many before the needs of the few, and I realized what a great opportunity it could be for the Royals to get some much needed draft picks for the coming years. I told Jaladolar to do what he needed to do for the good of the team and I would be okay with the outcome no matter what. I was then very surprised to find out that the team that had offered for me first was Oslo, considering they're top contenders right now for the Founder's Cup. Jaladolar then went on to tell me that despite the possibility of other teams being willing to offer more for me that he had wanted me to play for the Storm so that I would have the shot at the cup that I wouldn't have had with Bern or many other teams. It was at that moment that I truly realized what a great GM Jaladolar is. He had to make the very difficult decision to trade away players that were not only keystones of the team, but friends as well. So combine that with the fact that he also did everything he could to ensure that we went to high calibre teams that would give us both shots at the cup, and it's easy to see why Jaladolar will be a great GM for the Royals in the seasons to come.”

Jaime Hill on the Jody 3 Moons trade

"Jody was pretty much the only active player left on the Royals when Jaladolar took over the team, so he quickly set about helping us acclimatize to life in Bern. Jaladolar had been friends with Jody for a few months after meeting him through another league, but this was my first real interaction with him, and he made a huge impression on me both emotionally and in my game. It was nice to have another Zoidberg-esque player to practice with as Zoidberg was so busy playing his own games and being a general manager of a team, he didn't have as much time to help me practice as he used to. Jody absolutely deserved the captaincy with the extra practice hours he put in to help myself, Nicklas Karlsson, Kyle Kingma, and Sam Teibert. I found out he had been traded the day before I was traded myself, and initially I felt blindsided. How would we go on without our Captain, the absolute cornerstone of our team? But the more I came to think about it, as well as speaking to Jaladolar about the trade, I realized it was a good thing. Jaladolar wanted us to achieve things we wouldn't have been able to in Bern. I still don't think it was fair of Jody to accuse Jaladolar of only trading him to hurt point totals, but I do understand the emotions he must have been feeling at the time. Jody's a good guy and I know he'll be a huge asset to any team he plays for."

“Ah, Nicklas. I'm gonna miss that kid. For the first time in my career I knew what it felt like to be the Jody 3 Moons or Sachimo Zoidberg, because I was mentoring Nick in the same way they had mentored me. I am so insanely proud of Nick and the amazing player he's become. Even though I had been playing in the league a shorter time than him, as his line mate he immediately looked to me to teach him the style of hockey we played in Bern. Nick has got a ton of natural talent and while I've seen him express his anxiety about taking over captaincy and being left alone on our defensive line, I know he'll excel just as much without me as he did while I was there."

“So in the end, I'd like to thank Jaladolar and the entire Royals organization for giving me a great start to my first full season in the VHLM. To Nicklas Karlsson, Sam Teibert, and Kyle Kingma, thank you guys so much for making my stay in Bern great, and good luck in the rest of the season and beyond. To Jody 3 Moons, I'd like to say good luck with Bratislava but don't forget that I won't be there to defend you from the hits anymore, because I will be the hits! I can't wait to show what I can do with my new club in Oslo!”
