DollarAndADream 3,357
This season of the VHL held a very special place in the league. It was the 40th season, with lots of events taking place and a good amount of activity from each team. There were plenty of trades going down and the usual suspected teams did well. The Americans dominated for the most part just like in years prior, with the Cologne Express not too far behind them. The worst team was the Seattle Bears, who allowed 206 more goals in their net than they could manage scoring themselves. Quite a disappointing effort all things considered. Your Calgary Wranglers were a middle of the pack team, going 39-28-5 in their 72 games. Just as most people expected, they made the playoffs with a roster which had a big veteran presence. Thomas Landry was the biggest threat on the team, leading the squad with 82 points. Godavari Yumalatopinto returned to Calgary and scored 61 points being the best offensive output as a defenseman on the club. Every player on the Wranglers produced at a good pace, and goaltender Martin Brookside had a strong season as well to turn things around from previous seasons. ------------------------ ---------------------------- With all of that said, we turn to the captain: Travis Boychuk. This season he had a bit of a drop off in production, staying at 66 points which is not bad by any means. It remains an interesting statistic to look at though, since in his previous 2 seasons in the VHL he was a Top 10 producer in the league. With 33 goals and 33 assists in Season 40, he was a fairly consistent goal scoring threat. When you look at this club on paper compared to previous years, it was much stronger. It is simple to state that this could be the reason for the decline out of the Top 10 ranking. In years prior, Boychuk was easily the main man to look to for goals. In the playoffs, the Calgary Wranglers were facing off against a strong 1st Round opponent in the Quebec City Meute. The majority of analysts in the VHL predicted Quebec to surge through the Wranglers and take the series early on. The 1st game of the series had Calgary coming back with 2 goals in the 3rd period to win the game 3-2. In that 3rd period, they would out-shoot the Meute 21-8 with a ridiculous effort to take the first game. The next 3 games, Quebec won 3 close games all being just 1 goal apart. Although the Wranglers were down in the series 3-1 at the time facing elimination, it was not hard to guess that it was not over. Calgary would overpower the Meute in the next 3 games to beat the odds and win the series 4-3. Game 7 was certainly a thriller, with the shots being 52-42 in favour of the Wranglers. Calgary would eventually win in OT on a goal scored by the hero Godavari Yumalatopinto. Quebec was stunned. ----------------------- ----------------------- The Calgary Wranglers then went onto Round 2, to face the best team in the league: The New York Americans. As soon as this match-up was known, everyone knew they had their hands full. New York won the first 2 games 5-2 and 3-0. Despite the Wranglers getting the same amount of chances and shots, the Americans noticeably had more firepower. Calgary wound up winning Game 3 by a score of 4-3 with Brookside out-performing Wahl. This was seemingly only an off game from Brick Wahl, who saved the next 54 of 56 shots from the Wranglers winning Games 4 and 5 by a score of 2-1 and 3-1. The Americans went on to lose to Riga Reign in the finals. In the 2nd Round it became clear that the Wranglers' cinderella 1st Round effort was not going to be repeated against New York. On top of that, captain Travis Boychuk could only manage 6 points in his team's 12 playoff games. Boychuk was quoted after in saying, " I just could not manage to score enough. ", but nobody is blaming him for the post-season exit. From there it is on to the off-season the Wranglers go, and the mystery of what they will look like next season lies in the distance. twillcox94 21
Content: 3/3 Good overview of Boychuck's and the Wranglers' season. Grammar: 2/2 Nothing to bad at all. Godavari Yumalatopinto returned to Calgary and scored 61 points being the best offensive output as a defenseman on the club Should have a comma after 61points, but the wording still sounds off. I would of went Godavari Yumalatopinto returned to Calgary and scored 61 points, which was the best offensive output from a defenceman on the club. staying at 66 points, which is not bad by any means Appearance: 1/1 Nice placement and pictures. I also like the fact you bold/color names, numbers, scores, etc. Overall: 6/6 FINAL: 6/6 Edited December 1, 2014 by twillcox94 Will and DollarAndADream 2 Link to comment https://vhlforum.com/topic/14794-claimedcalgary-season-40-final-66/#findComment-155362 Share on other sites
