The day has finally come. Jarome Iginla has finally been traded back to his home team Calgary. It has been quite a while since Jarome last played in Calgary, last with the Flames in 2007 which was S3 of the VHL. Having travelled across the world playing for Boston, Pittsburgh, Colorado, Saskatoon, Helsinki, and just now Quebec City, Iginla feels relieved to return back to his roots. “It’s honestly surreal! I wish things could have worked in Quebec, but under the circumstances I was in, the Quebec GM felt it might be better for his team if he traded me to another team.” “I was fully aware that I was coming to Calgary, my GM and the Calgary GM kept me in discussions, but it took some perseverance to get the Calgary GM to swing in my favor and pull the trigger on the deal to send me back to my home town. I know I was born in Edmonton, but after being in Calgary for so long, it became my home.”

Sources say along with the possibility of coming back to play in Calgary, Jarome’s friend from the Simulation Hockey League was also on the team. “Yeah, Marcus Hurley is on the Wranglers, and I had a short stint with him in the Simulation Hockey League with the Texas Renegades, he was a great person to me, however, I didn’t make the roster and came back over to the VHL and played for Saskatoon. I am excited to play with him again, as I feel we have around the same calibre of play, and with Calgary in a rebuild situation now, I feel I can come in and help right away.”

Calgary traded away two big pieces of their franchise to acquire Iginla, as they sent both Travis Boychuk (long time Calgary Wrangler) and the rights to upcoming free agent Edwin Encarnacion to the Quebec City Meute who look to be coming out of their rebuild. Calgary also picked up a S43 1st round selection from the Meute, but as we are going into the S41 Entry Draft, that pick is still seasons away.

This was the second time in three days Iginla had been traded, the first trade that happened was between the Helsinki Titans and the Quebec City Meute, as Helsinki shipped Iginla, Ryan Catrall, and a S41 Helsinki 3rd to Quebec for star centerman Naomi Young. Iginla was actually very surprised he was moved out of Helsinki, as the GM had no prior intentions of doing so, as he thought. “Helsinki was a very good place for me, I had quite a few friends there, and they were a good bunch of players. I was excited to come in and play for them next season, but with the news of the trade, I was somewhat devastated to leave behind many friends, but I was excited to head onto Quebec and make some new friends.”

As the S40 season comes to a close, Iginla arrives back in Calgary to start a new chapter of his career, this time not with the Flames but instead, the Calgary Wranglers.

Good, brief article on Iginla's return. I want Iginla back with the Flames, doesn't seem right anywhere else.
