Team World Ends Gold Medal Drought

Recommended Posts

It's been a long time since Team World made much of an impact on the VHL World Cup. The last time they'd played for a medal was in S82, the last time they won one was the tournament before in S80, and their last gold medal came all the way back in S70.

All of those streaks have been reset now, though, as Team World recorded a 3-2 overtime victory over Team USA in this year's final on a goal by Severus Targaryen. Future Hall of Famer Lachlan Summers made 38 saves on 40 shots in the win, capping off a fine tournament in which he posted a .928 save percentage overall - including a .954 save percentage in the medal round.

After finishing the round robin in third place with a 5-3-2 record, the World squad reeled off a 5-3 win over Eastern Europe and a 4-1 win over Nordic (in which Summers stood on his head making 49 saves on 50 shots), setting up their gold medal match with the first-place qualifying Americans.
