Raphael Pettyfer

Position : Center

Handedness : Left

Born : Riga, Latvia

Height : 6'5
Weight : 200lbs
Current Team : Bratislava Watchmen (VHLM)

Earlier career

Pettyfers first team was Riga "Pārdaugava" where he started his hockey career. Of course as a young player he didn't really know where he wants to play. At the start he tried playing all of the positions except goalie. For the first 2 years Pettyfer played as a defender but eventually came to a decision that offense is just the thing for him. When Raphael turned 14 he and his family moved to Finland and that was a huge boost to his growth as a hockey player. He started to play in Finnish Junior Hockey championship and eventually learned how to play like a Finn and got used to smaller hockey fields (in Latvia they are bigger than in Finland or NA) But in Helsinki he stayed only for two short years, but it was just enough to make him a better forward. After two seasons in Finland Raphael went over the ocean to play in a NAHL team Fairbanks "Ice Dogs". The small rinks helped him became a better defensive payer as well. NAHL wasn't far so different from Finnish league as he thought before.

VHLM

The great performance in "Ice Dogs" made him a bit more obvious for better teams and two seasons ago he was claimed by another North American team - Yukon Rush. Raphael was claimed form the waiver list and played only 7 games achieving 8 points (1+7). Not a bad start. In the following VHLM dispersal draft young Latvian was selected with 16th overall pick in the second round by Bratislava "Watchman". At the start of the season it was clear, that Pettyfer won't be one of teams leaders because of guys like Zoidberg and Harumpf, but at the end of the season Raphael had 33 points (10+23) in 72 games while playing in the third line. But the main thing was that he won the cup with Bratislava and played his first ever playoffs in VHLM achieving 5 points (1+4) in 17 games. In this off-season Pettyfer was drafted in the VHL draft with 17th overall pick in the second round by Toronto "Legion". For now Raphael isn't trying to step inside the big league and play for Toronto. This seasons goal is to repeat what was reached last season - VHLM champion title.

Pros / Cons

Just as any other hockey player, Raphael has pros and cons. First of all - pros.
Puck Handling - Right now one of the biggest strengths for this young Latvian forward is the way he handles the puck. His size also is a big factor that helps him be more affective around the boards with and without the puck. Of course winning face-offs is more easily done if you have fast and long hands.
Passing - Another skill that is really useful for forwards, especially for center attackers - Playmakers. If we look at Pettyfers stats most of his points are coming from assists. He knows how to find an open line for the pass and thanks to his size and puck handling ability he's a really dangerous man while entering the offensive zone.

Face-offs - How can this not be on a pros list for a center attacker? I have no idea, but Pettyfer knows how to do his real job - winning face-offs. As I mentioned before, his long and fast arms as well as his athletic body, are really helpful at winning the pucks in crucial moments like on a powerplay, panelty kill or last seconds of the game. But now, lets look at cons.

Experience - As a young player, Pettyfer isn't really experienced and mature. That might be one of the reasons why he has some great games and than a chain of awful games. He just doesn't have the balance for his game that other, more experienced players have.

Defense - Also his defensive game could be a bit better than it is right now. There's no doubt that he's an offensive forward that likes to be in the opponent zone not defending his own net, but defense is a crucial skill that every great player needs to have at the best level possible.

Taking chances - Taking the chances you're given is really important in close games and play-offs, but if you can't manage to score, pass or clear the puck out of your defensive zone, than you may be in some serious problems. Although Pettyfer can score, and he has shown it before, he just likes to miss chances. Sometimes he just chooses not to shoot the puck.

Future expectations

Pettyfer is playing his second full season in VHLM and right now has made a deal with VHL team Toronto "Legion". The career opportunities are looking great and now he needs to step up his game to become the best possible player he can be. First step of becoming a superstar is to train hard and prove yourself in every practice and game to get some recognition not only from the coach and teammates but also from the fans and other hockey players. If Pettyfer can do that, than he has a chance of becoming something great.
