Last Saturday night, fans packed the Civic Arena to witness a charity boxing event that promised plenty of laughs — and Bash McMurray delivered, though not in the way he hoped. The veteran hockey enforcer, known for his bruising style on the ice, entered the ring for a friendly three-round exhibition match, but he made a surprising — and costly — choice: he wore his hockey skates instead of boxing shoes.

McMurray, who plays for the Miami Marauders, strutted into the ring to roaring applause, fully dressed in his team jersey and skates. When asked about the unusual footwear, he simply grinned and said, “Gotta stick with what got me here.” Unfortunately, the slick canvas of the boxing ring and the thin blades beneath him were a disastrous combination.

Within the first minute, McMurray struggled to keep his balance. Every jab he threw was countered by a wobble. His opponent, a retired firefighter named Joe “The Hammer” Harland, kept his cool and waited for the right moment. It came midway through the first round: Harland feinted left, McMurray leaned the wrong way, his skate slipped, and a clean right hook sent the hockey star sprawling to the mat.

Paramedics quickly checked him over, and McMurray was able to laugh off the incident, joking afterward, “Next time, I’ll lace up the gloves — and the right shoes.” Despite the knockout, the event raised over $50,000 for local youth programs.
