Pro's

Defensive Ability:

  • One of the most important aspects of a successful hockey team is good defensive structure, and Demko has the ability to be the future backbone of a team's defensive core. He rarely seems to make mistakes in the defensive zone, and really has an eye for breaking up plays.

Shooting Ability:

  • While the main focus of Demko's play is in the defensive zone, he's not one to shy away from making things happen on the other side of the ice. The best weapon in his offensive arsenal is his hard slap shot. While Demko might not be one to maneuver his way through the opponent to get to the net, he can definitely rip the puck from the point to create scoring chances. It might not always make it through, but players will think twice before getting in front of one of his shots.

Skating:

  • When it comes to perfecting the most important skill in hockey, Demko likes to work on the little skills that separate the good skaters from the bad. His speed is noticeable, but the best skating ability he possesses is his agility. He can explode out of tight turns with great velocity and can transition smoothly and quickly to effectively break up tight plays in his own zone.

Con's

Offensive Consistency:

  • Unfortunately, Demko is not a great "two-way" player. In some games, he can seem invisible in the offensive zone. Don't expect him to rack up a ton of points throughout the season. During several interviews throughout the year, Demko reiterated that he does not judge his success on the amount of points he scores, but on how well he plays defensively. While that may be good for him, it is tough to judge how successful a player will be on defensive ability alone. He will need to step up and be able to contribute on both ends of the ice when he makes his way into the VHL.

Checking:

  • Demko is a player that relies heavily on positioning when he is in the defensive zone; some might say the he relies too much on positioning alone. He does not possess a great physical talent on the ice. While some might say that his exceptional positioning outweigh the burdens of his physical presence, a man of his stature could stand to throw his body around a bit more.

Perfectionist... to the extreme:

  • Many professional hockey players (and athletes in general) will tell you than an important part of the sport is quickly learning from, and forgetting your mistakes. Unfortunately for Demko, this virtue is one that he does not currently posses. There have been several occasions last season where he would make a mistake (e.g. missing a pass, or letting in a bad goal), and would proceed to get frustrated with himself and finish the game on a bad note. In order to be successful in the VHL, he needs to learn how to properly handle adversity, and learn from his mistakes.

Demko's Potential:

  • Patrick Demko has the ability to be a great stay-at-home defensman in the VHL. While he may not have an extraordinary ability to tally up points, he does posses a great "hockey instinct" and does an exceptional job at breaking up plays and keeping the puck out of the net. He might not be as recognizable as some of his fellow draftees, but he still has the ability to be a core player on any VHL team.
