While followers of the Victory Hockey League expected to never have to be subjected to any more of the horrific hockey player Edwin Encarnacion, it turns out that they are going to in fact have to endure much more of the Dominican as he looks set to have another eight years in the VHL. After his final game in Season 42, Encarnacion was a target of a flamethrower attack planned by the VHL administration which was supposed to end the life of the defenseman. However this attack ultimately was not enough to finish off Encarnacion, who has become horribly disfigured by the accident and now has a flaming skull where a human head previously was. In return for not filing murder charges against the VHL administration (which would have seen the league cease operations and all of the current administration group charged with attempted murder), Encarnacion has been granted another eight seasons in the VHL, causing many hockey fans to opt out of renewing their season tickets.

While Encarnacion, who will be changing his name to Edwin Reencarnacion prior to his first game in the VHLM to signify his “reincarnation”, managed to make quite an impact on the all-time stats rankings, he will never be considered as a good hockey player due to his lack of ability with the puck. Averaging a miserable 0.59 points per game over his initial eight year VHL career, much of Encarnacion’s offensive output came down to being in the right place at the right time as opposed to being able to make something out of nothing like the more skilled VHL players. What Encarnacion is without doubt most remembered for is his physical approach to the game, which is signified by him leading all defensemen in career hits and penalty minutes.  Encarnacion was also never afraid to put his body in the way of the puck, ending his initial stint in the VHL second in all-time shots blocked. Despite his deficiencies on offense, Encarnacion was able to make it to the All-Star game three times in his career and even earned a few votes for the Sterling Labatte Award for the top defenseman of the season in Season 39. While he never won a Continental Cup in his eight seasons (although he did appear on the S41 Super Cup winning Brekker Bad team), that is more likely down to the teams he found himself on as the vast majority of the teams he played for were either in a rebuilding or a transitional phase. However Reencarnacion, who is also transitioning from defenseman to winger, has made it his priority to burn his name into history with multiple Continental Cup wins over the next eight seasons.

Pros

Defensive Capabilities

Despite all of the criticisms one can make about Reencarnacion, no one will argue with you that he is an elite defensive talent. A rare breed of player who seemingly enjoys pain, Reencarnacion has no problems putting his body on the line to help his team to victory. If Reencarnacion is able to transition his defensive skills to the winger position, we could see him pick up multiple Scott Boulet Awards.

Mobility

While he struggled to keep up with the fast pace of the VHL early on in his first stint in the league, Reencarnacion eventually realised that becoming a more agile player on the ice would help him contribute more to his team’s defensive efforts. When Reencarnacion eventually re-enters the VHL, he should have no problem keeping up with the elite players.

Passing

Towards the end of his first stint in the VHL, Reencarnacion began to focus more on distributing the puck to his opponents. While no one is actually clear as to what has triggered this focus, Reencarnacion saw his assists rise dramatically towards the end of his first stint, leaving many to believe that he will be a much more consistent playmaking threat with the puck than he was when he first joined the league.

Cons

Shooting

With Reencarnacion moving to winger, the big concern is that he has real problems shooting the puck. As one of a very small amount of players who had played all eight seasons and failed to break one hundred career goals, Reencarnacion will have to show a better touch around the goal if he’s to get significant playing time. One of the ways that his coaches will look to improve Reencarnacion’s shooting will be to try and transition over some of the skills he uses for his penalty shots, where he has had a surprisingly good conversion rate.

Aggression

While it’s not necessarily a bad thing for a player to show aggressiveness on the ice, there comes a point where you have to keep your cool and Reencarnacion simply isn’t capable of doing that. Leading the league in penalty minutes in five of his last eight seasons, Reencarnacion is prone to spending far too much time in the penalty box, which in turn leaves his team exposed on the power play. He’s also prone to starting fights with opponents and then not winning them as he has won just four of the twenty fights he has started, although at the same time he has only lost three of them.

Mental Attributes

One would have thought that Reencarnacion would have learned more about hockey having spent eight seasons playing the game, but alas he’s still completely oblivious as to how the game works and is more obsessed with racking up penalty minutes than contributing to his team’s success. In addition to his lack of hockey IQ, it’s safe to say that Reencarnacion is legitimately insane. Where else would you find a player who believes that defecating during the course of a game directly leads to his team’s success?
