Interview with the new Royal Giovanni Reuel

Giovanni Reuel has officially been claimed off waivers by the Bern Royals; a lucky break for the Italian, as the Royals sit atop the European Conference with an incredible 15-2-1 record. The talented puck handler joins an offensive core that has been dominating the VHLM, led by Tim TebowGow and Josh Merica who both have over fifty points in only twenty games.  I asked Reuel what it meant to him to join such a successful franchise.

“Success breeds success. You see that around the hockey world, the best teams in the NHL like Detroit have great AHL programs to help develop their players. OHL teams like the London Knights also always strive to win and produce some of the best talent. So having the opportunity to play for a successful team like Bern instead of a team struggling like Moscow, who I believe could have claimed me ahead of Bern, is a great chance to develop surrounded by great players.”

Playing for Bern is something that excited Reuel for reasons off the ice as well. Reuel was born and raised in Italy by German parents; he also lived briefly in Berlin. Bern is perfectly situated between the two countries which provides Reuel a great opportunity to see friends and family he left behind when he moved to Rimouski to play junior hockey. I asked Reuel to comment on what living in Bern means to him.

“Bern is a beautiful city and one I often traveled through going between Germany and Italy. Being in such a central location is awesome because I can easily access my support network which has done so much to help me reach this point in my life. It is something I missed moving to North America. At the same time Switzerland is a great country with a happy people. Everyone speaks English, Italian or German so I have no problem communicating with anyone I meet. Overall I could not imagine a better city to start my career in.”

Part of what has made Bern such a successful team is the active management provided by Sachimo Zoidberg. The VHL sniper is a player’s manager who goes out of his way to interact with the men who make up his team. I asked Reuel what sort of interactions, if any, he had had with Sachimo before being claimed.

“Sachimo was one of the first people to reach out to me when I announced my intention of joining the VHLM. He asked about my game and drive then informed me he was going to claim me off waivers. Since he has been a great help showing me around the city and explaining what it takes to make it in the VHLM. I am very happy I ended up with the Royals and am sure with Sachimo’s guidance I’ll be able to realize my potential!”

Confidant in his future and happy with his choice of team Reuel looks like a great addition to an already stellar lineup.
