Bern Stars Rising to the Challenge

The Bern Royals have been excellent thus far in the VHL play-offs which has gotten them into the VHLM final. The Royals had a first row bye for finishing first in the European Conference and waited for the winner of the Bratislava and Moscow series. Bratislava ended up winning that first round series in a 4-0 sweep which set up a Bratislava versus Bern semi-final.  The Royals ended up beating Bratislava in a hard fought series in 6 games to advance to the VHLM Final where the Brampton Blades awaited after they also finished off their semi-final series in 6 games over the Ottawa Lynx. There was no question Brampton would end up in the VHLM final but Bern had a tough road going through a good Bratislava team that gave them all they could handle every game.

Bern has been carried throughout the play-offs by three players, Tim TebowGow, Giovanni Reuel and Chuck Goody. Tim TebowGow was the league’s leading scorer in the regular season by a fairly big margin. In the play-offs thus far TebowGow has recorded 5 goals and 10 assists for 15 points in 10 games which is good for third on the Royals. Although those numbers are not as sexy as his regular season numbers he has been solid in both zones and has been playing excellent hockey. TebowGow is an excellent player by himself but the emergence of his line mate Reuel has given Bern a whole new gear offensively.

TebowGow and Reuel celebrating a goal

Giovanni Reuel has been the surprise of these play-offs for Bern. Reuel did not have great numbers in the regular season with 10 goals and 15 assists for 25 points in 54 games. But Reuel did not let his regular season get him down and he is on a mission in these play-offs. So far he has 3 goals and has racked up 10 assists for 13 points in 10 games. He is second in scoring on Bern and has been a pivotal part of Bern’s success in these play-offs. His play in these play-offs will likely rise his draft stock and make scouts more aware of his amazing talent.

Chuck Goody, one of the best defenseman in the VHLM

Chuck Goody has been Bern’s overall best player in the play-offs with his 8 goals and 7 assists for 15 points. Goody has been a two-way force on the Royals blue line and could very well win the league’s best defenseman award.  Goody has been involved in both overtime winning goals in the VHLM finals with a primary assist on a Marcel Faux game winner in game one and scored one of his own in game 2. Chuck Goody’s a star in the VHLM and could be going up to the VHL after his great season in the minors.

Although these three have been the best players for Bern in the playoffs the rest of the team has been contributing as well. Marcel Faux has contributed to a goal and an assist in two overtime periods in the finals. Overall he’s produced 8 points in 10 games on the team’s second line. Bernie Gow has also been decent between the pipes with a 7-2-1 record and 2.30 goals against average.  Although his numbers are not great he has been solid in the net for Bern which gives them the chance to win every night.

The Bern Royals are now leading the VHLM finals 3-1 over the Brampton Blades and will be looking to end it tonight where the two teams clash in game 5.
