Filip Lundqvist, the cousin of New York Rangers franchise goaltender Henrik Lundqvist, is a very talented goaltender coming into the VHL. He has worked with Henrik Lundqvist during every summer since he was 8 years old, and he has had 10 years of hard work to get to where he is now, an up and coming goalie in the VHL. Filip has high potential at only 18 years of age, but can he transition to the VHL easily? Let's take a look at his pro's and con's to see.

Pro's:

Reaction Time:

Filip Lundqvist is a very good goalie who has very good reaction time, he can react to quick snapshots and plays off the rush and read the plays well enough to make a save on the initial shot, he can react very quickly to many plays made by the opposition.

Rebound Control:

Filip has very good rebound control, he can direct low shots off the pad, and to the corner easily to stop rebounds from occurring. He also fights to cover the puck to prevent rebound chances and he is very proficient in it. He is what I would call a "first shot goalie" which means he usually can control the first shot, smothering it a lot of the time.

Hand Speed:

Filip Lundqvist worked on this a lot with Henrik, his hand speed. Filip knows how to snatch a puck with his glove quickly or to flash the blocker on a tough shot. Filip fights off a lot of tough shots with his blocker and glove, and he does it very efficiently.

Con's:

Skating:

Filip isn't a great skater, and it shows, he doesn't go behind to his net to retrieve chipped or dumped in pucks very often. Filip needs to work on his skating so he can be better in, and outside of his net when needed. Filip's lack of ability to skate also delays the amount of time it takes him to get to the bench for empty net or delayed penalty situations, he needs to improve his skating, big time.

Agility:

Again, Filip has a problem with his speed, and it shows, big time. Filip has a good amount of trouble with very quick passing plays, and cross crease plays and such. He needs to improve his agility to make the tougher passing play saves and to help out himself in the long run. If his agility is increased then his job will be much easier.

Style Control:

Filip's last con is his style control. Filip can sometimes get a bit off track when having tough games, and he doesn't play to his style, the style that helps him make saves easier then they look. When he isn't in control of his style, Filip lets in soft goals, like wrist shots from the blue line, and even a few knuckle ball shots on net. If Filip improves his style control drastically, he could be an impact goalie. All in all, if Filip Lundqvist plays to his strengths, and plays a Henrik Lundqvist type style of play, anything is possible with this young goaltender.
