Free agency can be the best of times for a team as it can also be the worst of times. Some teams sign big star players after they hit the open market while other teams lose said star players. VHL free agency is a bit different, sure we have the big names like Odin Tordahl that move teams but we also have players like Chief Runningwater signing 1 year 7 million deals so teams can reach the salary floor, now let us look at some notable, laughable deals some teams have signed player too

Season 35 - Center Chief Runningwater

Chief Runningwater was a Season 29 draftee who was not selected in the 3 round, 24 player draft (technically 14th overall was forfeited by Riga as compensation for acquiring Michal Wozniak). In 50 games after signing the deal he put up 4 goals and 8 assists for 12 points. He also finished an ugly -40 in just under 20 minutes per game. He was hardly worth the 7 million that the Riga Reign paid for him.

Season 36 - Goaltender Rock Star

Rock Star was Season 30 draftee who was selected in the 4th round, 25th overall by the Helsinki Titans. After a few seasons toiling around in the minors he signed a lucrative contract with the Calgary Wranglers. He signed on for 1 year at 7 million. During this year he went 6-57-1, which doesn't look very good at all but his save percentage at this time was 0.912 which was better than Mike Szatkowski Jr (0.909), Steven Smyl (0.909) and Brick Wahl (0.911). His G.A.A though was worse in the league by 1.32 goals (4.90).

Season 36 - Left Wing Henrik Larsson

Calgary really gave out the cash in Season 36, signing Henrik Larsson to a 1 year 7 million dollar deal, one to match G Rock Star. Larsson a draftee of Season 30, played pretty good considering the circumstances of the team. He led the team with 33 goals 25 assists and 58 points. His goal output was better than Niklas Lindberg (32 goals), Robert Gow III (32 goals) and Xin Xie Xiao (29 goals) just to name a few.

Season 36 - Defenceman Hashtag Manning

Calgary continued to spend lavishly throughout the offseason of Season 36. They brought in a forward, a goalie and a defenceman all for 7 million a year. Hashtag probably has one of the best names in the history of the VHL. In season 36 he was given the reigns as the number one defenceman and did a decent job considering. He put up 17 goals and 23 assists for 40 points. He was a pretty ugly -44 though.

There we have it folks, from Season 35-36 we have 4 players who signed contracts worth 28 million dollars. Arguably none of these player lived up to the contract, but that is for you to decide as a lot of variables come into to play such as stats compared to other players, what kind of situation they were put in and teams could have been just trying to reach the cap floor. This is the value we have of hindsight, at the time they could have been good deals but now we see they were not.

This scrub didn't have have 366 hits :P

Content: 3/3 - Haha, those salary cap deals are always funny. A don't think i've seen someone look at free agent signings (or atleast in awhile), so nice idea! VHL is definitely not like some other leagues, not that its a bad thing. Makes teams have to trade for talented rather than use the cap space to buy it.

Grammar: 2/2 - I didn't catch anything.

Appearance: 1/1 - Yup looks nice.

Overall: 6/6
