Name: Jordan Maverick

Position: Left Wing

Age: 18

Height: 6’4”

Weight: 213

Handedness: Left

Hometown: Minneapolis, MN

NHL Comparison: Rick Nash

Team: Bern Royals :ber:

Player Strengths:

Skating: Jordan Maverick is a solid skater across the board. He’s a big-bodied guy at 6’4, 231 pounds and he protects the puck well using his big frame. He can see the ice and barrels through everyone. He always has head up and is looking for the right play. Jordan is fluid and seems to skate with ease. He is able to pick up speed and change direction fairly quickly for a big guy. Even with his physicality, he also never seems to be down on the ice and has an uncanny ability to be in the right place at the right time. His work along the boards is formidable and he provides a strong net presence.

Scoring: As a power forward, most expect Jordan to help create lanes and bring a physical presence to the ice. He can do all of these, but he also brings the ability to score when called upon. He has a hard shot which he can release very quickly and is dangerous shooting off the rush and on one timers. You will also find Maverick in front of the net creating a screen or ready for a tip, deflection or rebound goal.  He tends to generate scoring chances through his hard work. Maverick may not lead the team in scoring, but it is still definitely a strength when a power forward can bring some high-end goal scoring ability!

Puck Handling: It isn’t often you see a 6’4″ left winger with the skill that Jordan Maverick possesses. He can play the game as a power forward, but also has nifty stickwork, patience, and grit that make him a strong two-way player. Lawson shields the puck easily and uses his body to his advantage often outworking opponents to break into the offensive zone and creating chances. It seems impossible to separate him from the puck and he is consistently successful picking up loose pucks. He is often able to edge out opponents using his speed, size and strong puck handling ability.

Player Weaknesses:

Passing: While Jordan Maverick has great scoring ability, his passing is a slight afterthought that could use some attention moving forward. He was used to carrying the offense the last season, in which he was used mainly to put shots on goal. He sees the ice well and can recognize the play, but will too often look shoot first or second-guess himself before attempting to make the play. It may be more of a mental thing at this point in time, but it does seem like something that could be improved. Maverick doesn’t lack the ability or stick handling skills, so look for this to be something as a point of concentration. However, Maverick will always lean towards shooting and scoring over making a pass.

Fighting: Obviously by now you know Jordan Maverick style of play, size and strengths. So the fact that he isn’t a top-tier fighter is a tad off-putting. While he has no problem crushing players into the boards or landing a devastating open-ice hit… he won’t drop the gloves very often. When he does, it isn’t anything special. You would hope that a guy that towers over players would be able to throw some better punches and protect his teammates, but it’s understood that Jordan has been quoted saying “I can’t score if I’m sitting in the box all night.” So, at least there’s some reasoning behind it!

Penalty Shots/Breakaways: Maverick scores most of his goals in a gritty style. Working hard to find open space, working in front of the net, etc. He is great at scoring this way! However, if you give him too much room, he seems to almost psych himself out. It is odd I will say, but he is more of a natural reaction player, rather than a pure goal scorer. He isn’t going to go out there and dangle a goalie or slide the puck between his legs or try a spin-a-rama. If Jordan Maverick is taking a penalty shot, he is more likely to skate 10 ft, wind up and rip a clapper at the goalie. This is okay, but you’re a head coach, Maverick more than likely won’t be on the first few players you send out to win the game in a shootout.
