 Titan Power

Last season the Helsinki Titans had a record of 10-55-7. They finished Season 44 with a measly 27 points and in last place in the entire league. They won the top two picks in the draft and everything has changed. The Titans scored 141 goals and had 314 goals against with a minus 173 goals differential in their S44 campaign. Defenseman Pablo Escabar led the team is scoring with an impressive 24 goals and 62 assists for 86 points. Goaltender HEL G has a .899 save percentage and a 4.25 goals against average last season. That season Helsinki stashed prospects Marcel Faux and Aleksi Koponen in the minors to keep them away from the losing environment in Helsinki.

“I was happy Helsinki let me go back to the VHLM to play for Saskatoon. I really enjoyed going on a cup run and eventually winning the Founder’s Cup. I was pretty thankful they allowed me that opportunity. Although they gave me an option to stay up if I’d like but I did not want to. Although the team struggled I felt kind of bad. But for me being back in juniors helped me better my game and confidence so I think it was the right choice."

O'Malley playing in his first game as a Titan

Fast forward to Season 45, the Titans have a record of 51-15-5 for 107 points. The Titans clinched the Victory Cup and of course made the play-offs. Quite a turn around for a franchise in just one year. They scored 268 goals and allowed 158 goals with a plus 110 goal differential. Veteran Thomas O’Malley leads the team in scoring with 48 goals and 70 assists for 118 points near the end of the season. Rookie goaltender Greg Clegane had a sparkling .917 save percentages and a 2.20 goals against average. Prospects Aleksi Koponen and Marcel Faux played a major part in the Titans depth with Koponen being second in rookie scoring.

“I was pretty exciting going into this season with all the hype in the off-season. We picked up two amazing players in the draft and picked up one of the best players in the league in O’Malley. The excitement in the locker room and in the city was amazing. It’s great to be a part of an organization that is now in win mode. The rebuild did not last long and the future is still looking bright over here. The play-offs and the next few seasons should be fun.”

Clegane being good

General Manager William Shaw did some great work in the off-season to improve the Titans but also ran into some luck in regards to the draft. Although the Titans tanked in a strong draft class which also helps the rebuild process. The Titans improvement is mostly due to the likes of veterans Thomas O’Malley, Christoph Klose and Brady Stropko who were all brought in by the Titans General Manager in the off-season via trade.

With the season coming close to an end the Titans will now look to the play-offs. The Titans are still a fairly inexperienced team especially on the blue line and in goal. So it should be interesting to see if the young Titans can deliver in the play-offs.

Content: 3/3 - I would have liked to see more, but a nice brief review of the Titans' fortunes through the draft and trades over the past year.  Quite the turnaround indeed...  Would be quite the story to see them go all the way!  ~550.

Grammar: 2/2 - Otherwise good

turn around = turnaround (marginal)

goaltender Greg Clegane had a sparkling .917 save percentages = percentage

major part in the Titans depth = major part in the Titans' depth

Appearance: 1/1 - si senor
