WC S46 - Interview With Team Canada GM

Recommended Posts

Mitch Higgins is no stranger to being a World Cup General Manager, as this will be his third stint as Team Canada's General Manager, exactly twenty seasons after he made his World Cup GM debut. Since that first stint as a World Cup General Manager, Higgins has had pretty much as much success as you could hope for; he's had two players inducted into the Hall of Fame, he was the General Manager of the Helsinki Titans when they won the Continental Cup in Season 34 and has become a vital cog in the running of the VHL, becoming Commissioner of the VHL and Head Simmer of the VHLM.

Congratulations on being selected as Team Canada's General Manager for the upcoming World Cup! Team Canada have had a rough time at the last two World Cups and are the only team that failed to at least make the Bronze Medal Game in both those tournaments. Do you think the team just had bad luck in those tournaments or do you feel like there was something more to it?

Canada's performance at the recent World Cups has been a bit of a disappointed, but it has to due with the fact that there is constantly four of five legitimate contenders for the gold medal. It's been six and three seasons since the last world cups, so it's the mark of a new era for Canada.

In the last two tournaments, Team Canada were lucky enough to have two of the best goalie talents of that era at their disposal in Brick Wahl and Mike Szatkowski Jr. This tournament however, Team Canada will have the least experienced goalie in Atticus Von Braxton IV. How much more difficult does it make it having a goalie with no VHL experience when competing against teams who have goalies with at least three years of VHL playing time under their belts?

Experience will be the only quality lacking for our goaltenders this World Cup. We believe that Von Braxton will give us a chance to win every game as he tries to prove that he is ready to move up to the VHL. He is currently playing in the VHLM finals so there is no question to his abilities in net.

Nicolas Caprivi surprisingly called an end to his career earlier on this month, is his retirement a big loss for Team Canada or do you feel like you have enough depth at the forward position to cover for his loss?

It was certainly a loss for the WC team, but it will give a chance for our younger players to make the roster. There is no lack of depth that's for sure.

Team Canada looks like a team with an impeccably bright future ahead of them. Not only do they have the Season 46 1st overall selection in Zach Parechkin, but they also have the consensus Season 47 1st overall selection in Jon Sleeman along with top Season 48 prospects Black Velvet and Unassisted and future Quebec City Meute franchise player Tom Lincoln. Of the team's great young players, who do you think will be the biggest asset to Team Canada in the long run?

Canada will be going through a changing of the guard, so to speak this upcoming World Cup, as we turn the future into the now. Having these young bright stars like Parechkin, Sleeman, Lincoln, and Unassisted will mean that Canada is a competitive force for the next few World Cups. Possibly the biggest asset to Canada in the long run will be the development of Von Braxton.

The Season 46 World Cup will see three Continental Cup winning General Managers take charge of international teams. How important do you think prior GM experience is in an off-season tournament like the World Cup?

There are some similarities and there may be an advantage for the coaching aspect like lines and strategies of being a manager, but the biggest part of being a World Cup GM is to promote team activity and choose the most active line up, not necessarily the best on paper.

Last tournament Team Canada was eliminated in the Quarter-Finals by Team Mercenaries courtesy of a Marcus Hurley hat-trick. Has Hurley done enough to finally warrant a place in Team Canada in what will be his final World Cup or will he have to look to Team Mercenaries once again to find World Cup playing time?

Hurley clearly played great for the Mercenaries and put his name on the map to be selected in the future by Canada. The team will certainly be looking for a veteran presence, and with his World Cup experience, Hurley could be a great addition to Canada.

Final question, in addition to being a General Manager at this World Cup, you will also be simming it. In the wake of some discussion that's taken place during the playoffs, do you find the "r.i.g.g.i.n.g" jokes that are thrown around annoying or do they not bother you at all?

Doesn't affect me.

Thanks to Higgins for his time
