Latino in the News: 4th Edition

It’s been a while since we caught up with Felipe Rodriguez, now of the Saskatoon Wild.  Last time we spoke to him it was right after the previous season had ended.  Now we’re about 50 games in to the new season.  Today we are speaking to him about the points race he had once led.  Now, he has been passed by fellow defenseman Black Velvet and teammate Sir William Covington III.  This is what he had to say about the current points race:

“It’s all friendly competition.  It was nice to have the lead while it lasted and I truly thought I had a chance to maintain the lead.  It’s looking like Black Velvet might run away with it though.  He had a pretty nasty hat-trick streak that just ended a few games back.  I think, though, that I’ve taken a step back scoring-wise now that Sir William Covington III has taken second place in the race. I has allowed me to focus on the defensive side of things a bit more.  I play my heart out week in and week out and I think my shot block totals are a good indicator of that.  Do I wish I was leading the league in points still? Yes.  Do I think I can regain that lead?  It would be a long shot, but I’ve been wrong before.  All of this is not to say that Black Velvet and Covington aren’t deserving of the points lead, they most certainly are, but with this being my last year in the VHLM, I was kind of hoping to lead the league.  I still think I can take home some hardware come season’s end with the campaign I’ve put together so far.  Last season I had 55 points in 66 games.  So far this year, through 50 games, I’ve already put up 90 points.  I couldn’t be more happy with what I’ve done so far in points.  I think some may call this a cop out or say I’m just saying this because of the current situation, but the stat I’m most excited about is the 126 blocked shots this season.  I’m 20 blocks ahead of second place and I hope to keep that pace up more so than the scoring pace.”

Keep in mind, Black Velvet’s point lead is impressive on its own but taking into consideration the fact that Yukon has played two less games than other teams makes it even more impressive.  Despite two less games, Velvet has lead the Yukon Rush to 33 wins, tied for the most wins of any team with the Ottawa Lynx.  Meanwhile, Covington and Rodriguez’s team, the Saskatoon Wild, is sitting in second with 31 wins.

We also asked him what he expected the Wild to do the rest of the season and here is his response:

“Well, we’re currently in third place.  I know Brampton isn’t going to be making a run at the end as they’ve traded away pretty much all players for picks already.  I think with our improved goalie play lately, we can definitely take it to Ottawa and Yukon if we met them in the post season.  We’ve won our last three games against Ottawa.  Yukon, we haven’t been very successful against as of late but that may have been around the time of Velvet’s hat-trick streak.  Now that he’s come back down to earth, relatively speaking of course, I think it’s a pretty even playing field. “

Interviewer: "What do you think of all the All-Star Week commotion?"

Felipe: "It's nice to be recognized and it's also nice to have everything in the middle of the season like it is in several other leagues.  I'm not sure where I stack up in the whole thing though.  I think I'll be involved in some capacity but with me being a VHL send-down, I'm not completely sure.  Even so, I'll be there cheering on my fellow players, regardless of whether or not I'm involved.  I know I think I should be in the game but I don't know who is in control of the voting."

Interviewer: “Thank you very much, Felipe.  Thanks for taking the time to chat with us.  Let’s not wait so long for next time.”

Felipe: “You’re very welcome, don’t be strangers.”

Very nice write up interview about your player. It's good seeing all the diversity here in the league and I can't really think of many top tier players who were spanish really. It seems like your player is turning out pretty good. The all-star festivities seem like the can really be enjoyable and your player surely looks like he can handle the spotlight.
