It is amazing how much a GM can whiff in a draft. Here I will break down the drafts of the past to show which GM's hit and which ones missed.

Amstel Tigers: :ams: 8 Picks

Robert Sharpe: 274 GP | 144 W | 100 L | 21 OTL | 0.889 SV% | 3.10 G.A.A | 14 SO | 0 A

Robert Sharpe was the first ever draft pick in the history of the league. Unfortunately for him, he was involved in a steroid scandal which didn't allow him to practice for all of Season 1. Despite this he had a pretty decent career in my eyes. His career numbers are along the lines of those other goalies who played during this era. Those goalies were also inducted into the hall of fame. I think Sharpe deserves to be there if these other goalies are there but oh well. He won 144 games in his career while losing 100 and losing 21 in overtime/shootout. His 0.889 save percentage is not as good but for his era it is decent because we had no TPE cap and players like Scotty Campbell and Brett Slobodzian who ran roughshot all over the league. Sharpe won a Continental Cup in Season 3 with the Calgary Wranglers and has a Gold Medal somewhere along the way with team Canada. Overall, he was a good goalie in the early era despite the setback.

Petr Shirokov: 290 GP | 121 G | 213 A | 334 P

Petr Shirokov was taken at the end of the 2nd round in the Season 1 Entry Draft, 16th overall. He had a very short career which only spanned 290 games which is a little more than 4 seasons. In these 4 seasons though, he scored 121 goals while assisting on 213 points for a total of 334 points. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame after he had retired but is arguably one of the least deserving members in the eyes of many which is somewhat true. His numbers speak for themselves and they are good for just 4 seasons. He was also a defenseman, just to put in perspective, Shawn Muller just finished his 4th season and has 294 points in 288 games. Imagine if he career went longer, he would probably have put up even better points.

Ondrej Skokan: 288 GP | 153 G | 149 A | 302 P

Ondrej Skokan I had a great run in the VHL as well. He also played in just 4 seasons. He played all 288 games scoring 153 goals and assisting on 149 for 302 points. He is one of the few players to score more goals in their career than to have assisted on goals. The 3rd round pick, 22nd overall had a very good career which culminated in him winning the Season 3 Continental Cup with the Calgary Wranglers.

Juan de la Martinez: 72 GP | 1 G | 16 A | 17 P

Juan de la Martinez was drafted in the 4th round, 27th overall. He did not pan out as he only last one season, although this season was not with the Tigers. He was traded to the Helsinki Frostbite and only played one season playing in 72 games scoring 1 goal and assisting on 16 for 17 points. Not a very good pick here.

Yaroslav Mikaiholavich: 72 GP | 9 G | 32 A | 41 P

Yaroslav was drafted in the 5th round, 38th overall. He also did not pan out and retired after just one season in the VHL. He was a very decent 2nd/3rd line center scoring 9 goals and assisting on 32 for 41 points. That was basically it and went back to Russia to play in the Russian Super League, now KHL.

Alex Stokes: 204 GP | 36 G | 78 A | 114 P

Alex Stokes was a 6th round draft pick, 43rd overall and he was good considering where he was drafted. He played a little under 3 seasons scoring 36 goals and assisting on 78 for 114 points in 204 games. He was a very good depth option in his career. He wasn't lights out like I said, and he didn't win the big one

Justin Westrum: 0 GP | 0 G | 0 A | 0 P

Nick Ovechkin: 0 GP | 0 G | 0 A | 0 P

Verdict:

Overall, I would say that the Amstel Tigers hit on about 3 out of their 8 draft picks which is good enough for 37.5% of their total draft picks in history. An argument could be made for Stokes possibly but no I don't think he was a hit.

1. Amstel Tigers: 3/8 = 37.5%

Review: Who the hell was Amstel's GM back then? Jesus christ their draft really sucked. Glad it didn't set the whole franchise back ala Vasteras. Anyway i graded your Calgary article first and I'll say it again, Im very intrigued by these. Keep doing them!
