So this debate has more to do with the recent and ongoing World Junior Hockey Championship tournament going on in Malmo currently. This debate pertains more to the number than this years tournament in particular though. The WJHC used to be filled with the best 8 teams that qualify. Now it is filled with the best 10 teams that qualify. The current rules for being eligible as a player are:

~ the player is of male gender;
~ the player has his 20th birthday in the year of the tournament's ending (i.e. 1994 for 2014 tournament), and at latest, the fifth year after the tournament's ending (i.e. 1999 for 2014 tournament);
~ the player is a citizen in the country he represents;
the player is under the jurisdiction of a national association that is a member of the IIHF.

~ If a player who has never played in IIHF-organized competition wishes to switch national eligibility, he must have played in competitions for two consecutive years~in the new country without playing in another country, as well as show his move to the new country's national association with an international transfer card. In case the player has previously played in IIHF-organized competition but wishes to switch national eligibility, he must have played in competitions for four consecutive years in the new country without playing in another country, he must show his move to the new country's national association with an international transfer card, as well as be a citizen of the new country. A player may only switch national eligibility once.

So I ask should the U-20 WJHC include more teams than the 10 it does now?

Two pools, seed top five teams in A, bottom five in B. All teams in A, top three in B seed and play single elimination playoffs.

Would contemplate twelve teams in this format.

Creates better games for the fan.

Late post, by two weeks.

12-14 teams would be nice the more the better

The good would be that since there are pretty much a rotation of 5 good teams, this would give the Germany's and England's of the world a fighting chance to win a game. The other good is that it would mean possibly MORE junior hockey :D

The bad is that when a team like Canada come up against a minnow like Hungary,,, what's the point? Being outshot 100-3 is hardly a fair contest.

I say do it Europa / Champs League stylez

I say do it Europa / Champs League stylez

The medals of Europa get into the Champs tourney the next year with the big fellas and the bottom three get relegated to the Europa / scrub junior tourney

The medals of Europa get into the Champs tourney the next year with the big fellas and the bottom three get relegated to the Europa / scrub junior tourney

Thats actually not a half bad idea.

Something like this:

Champions Tourny: Canada, USA, Russia, Sweden, Finland and Czech Republic (Top 3 win medals, bottom two get relegated)

2nd Tourny: Slovakia, Switzerland, Latvia, Poland, Denmark and Ukraine (Top 2 go up, bottom 2 go out)

Obviously those team would change every year.
