The first set metal alloy doors swished open as he approached, and closed again as he stepped foot into the small hallway that served as something of a wildlife airlock. In spite of himself, his breath caught as the second set of door slid open and he caught his first glimpse of the aviary. His first thought was that the room was massive, far bigger than he had realized. It had obviously been an oversight on his part as a Captain to ignore the aviary to the degree that he did not know its scope. The room was warm, the air sticky-sweet, and dense with foliage. Artificial sunlight dripped through the leaves of massive trees. Everything in this room was flourishing. The music of dozens of songbirds flowed through the room, reverberating off of the mirrored walls, creating a cacophony of song. His gait slowed as he tried to take in everything. Essian Ravenwing had never seen anything quite like this. As his feet trod on the path, he occasionally heard the laughter of some of his crew, enjoying their break somewhere off in the bushes. Ravenwing abruptly realized that for the first time in as far back as he could remember, he had not been thinking about his post as Captain. He had simply been living in the moment, taking in the things that were in his immediate surroundings, and enjoying them for what they were. His heart sank even as his nerves steeled, and he quickly left the aviary. There was no doubt left in his mind as to what he needed to do.

The New York Americans forward sat upright in his bed, a cool sweat sliding down his brow, and a sheen of it across his chest. The dream was so vivid, so alien, so unsettling....

As Ravenwing's head flopped back down to the pillow, he tried to clear his head, to focus on his sleep meditation, his study of the upcoming opponents for the Americans. But the birdsong would not let him sleep.
