Research Article: How Well Do Teams Who Spend The Most on Defensemen Do? - The Complete Statistics

Recommended Posts

So some people who were reading my media spots will notice that I haven't completed my series on money spent on defensemen. The main reason for this is that I continually do this thing where I set up to do a series of media articles, but then I end up distracted/other stuff comes up that's worth writing about at the time and the series gets delayed and delayed to the point where I completely forget about the series until it's to the point where it wouldn't make sense to make another installment of something I last wrote about over a month ago. So I figure the best thing for me to do is instead of continuing the media series is to post a link to the information I got together and then do a small overview here:

Notes of Interest

- The reason why I had more seasons tracked for Championship Winning Teams Defensemen than Leading Teams in Defensemen Salaries is because I tracked the Championship one while the oldvhl backup forum was still live.

- These lists also only include teams who were intending to make the playoffs in order to exclude rebuilding teams who spent lots of money on single defensemen in order to make cap floor

- If the Legion remain in fourth place in the North American Conference, that would mean that more teams that lead the league in defensemen salaries have gone on to miss the playoffs (4) than made the Continental Cup finals (3).

- Phil Hamilton has been on four of the last five VHL teams to lead the league in defenseman spending.

- The Season 45 Vikings are the only team to lead the league in defensemen spending and also finish last in their conference.

I kind of always felt like it was a known quantity that it's unlikely to succeed with just good D. Even if you have a crazy good goalie. You need 1-2 elite level forwards to do damage usually.

This information sort of confirms that, you have some outliers for sure but you can see on all the cup winners how the balance in regards to top d vs top forwards exist.
