A player agent (His own mother to be exact) approached us last week and asked us why we had ignored their client. Where in truth is we like to keep our columns to a set length, and weren’t really looking to single him out but in this case we decided to take a deeper look at this client.

At first glance as we look at Vernon Von Axelberry, he looks like your typical goaltender. He stands at a good six foot three and has a good lanky frame to build on. So he meets the size requirements and is athletic enough to play the sport. He seems to have good reflexes and natural instincts as well judging from the few games he has played. Currently he has started three games for the Watchmen in the VHLM and subbed in for 2 more. He has won all three games that he has started, sporting a 1.96 goals against and a 0.908 save percentage. Not bad considering he only just picked up hockey a short time ago. A gym rat before he made the switch the hockey, there are few if any concerns about his conditioning and strength going forward. Likely it would be the technical skills that will plague him to start with at least for the time being. Things like skating can be taught over time, though it is likely not doing him any favours at the moment, he will need to learn quickly in order to not fall behind. There are quite a few pros about Axelberry here that scouts will like, especially given his determination to learn the sport.

That being said, Axelberry comes with a whole swath of buyer warnings. A playboy DJ of sorts one could say that loves to party as it has basically been his lifestyle for the last few years and whom has had all the money in the world. The life a rockstar may collide with the team dynamics as situations like this have occurred prior in the VHL and NHL as well. His will of course to learn the sport also may impact his confidence, as something to be wary of that should the career falter, he may just fall back upon his original lifestyle as a DJ. The added pressure of course from his lifestyle and his name would also potentially be additional burdens that he will have to resolve should he want to see his progression through the league. Additionally to that, there have been times where parental-player-agents have clashed with other players in the locker room, and despite not being here to judge, that could become an issue for some people and their agents.

So in conclusion what do we have? We have an extremely intelligent young man that cares not about money, deciding to do a career change into hockey. He has the natural genetics for it but he has never played before and leads a lavish lifestyle. Is that something you or your team would want to invest in? A huge boom or a huge bust? Which will it be?

Review:

A guy jumping into hockey and trying to make the VHL with zero hockey experience?

Sounds like a bold plan. Let's see if it pans out for him.
