GOALIE

Weight: 190 lbs

Number: #1

Chet Manley bursted onto the VHLM scene early last season via free agency, a previously unheard of commodity. After a stellar campaign at the US Under-18 Development Camp - All VHLM teams took notice and thus Chet's career took shape. He would sign with Saskatoon leading them to a 3rd place finish and a heartbreaking Game 7 loss in the VHLM Semi-Finals. Manley would be drafted by the Titans and was sent down to the VHLM for a development season. VHL scouts are both high and low on Manley who does have a lot of personal drama to overcome to get to the next level. Deemed as a boom or bust prospect - let's look at his strengths and weaknesses...

STRENGTHS

Glove Hand: The one thing Chet Manley is very known for is his fast glove. The most polished of his talents is his ability to snag pucks out of tough situations with a lightning-quick glove hand. Manley will almost purposefully dare shooters to go glove side so he can flash the leather and rub it in their face.

Rebound Control: Secondary (and complimentary) to his glove hand, Manley has excellent rebound control. Part of that comes from being able to control the puck with glove saves, but further than that he is excellent at containing the puck to his body and not allowing shooters second-chances. We've seen this countless times in the VHLM where teams were kept under 10 shots as he constantly was able to stop play or turn it the other way around.

Agility: We sort of touched on this with his glove hand but Manley is fairly agile as a netminder and that's beyond his glove hand. He moves laterally pretty well and is able to quickly get to and from the back of the net to play the puck. By far not the fastest goalie in the league but certainly not a liability with his speed.

WEAKNESSES

Size: We aren't talking about his actual height and weight here, in that department Manley is an above average goalie. More so, it's his ability to 'look big' in net that we're counting as a weakness. Manley doesn't fill out the net very well and this creates weaknesses in his game that shooters can exploit if they avoid his glove hand. Manley could use a burger or two here and there, it definitely wouldn't hurt.

Leadership: Not that it's a huge trait you look for in a goaltender, but Manley isn't one to 'inspire' his teammates. He's a jokester in the locker room according to teammates but he's far from motivational which can sometimes be needed from your goaltender. His play makes or breaks the game though not his words.

Attitude: On and off the ice, if it's one thing that can get Chet Manley in trouble it's his attitude. He's cocky just about all the time which can be a good thing to a point but too much of it can be negative to a team's atmosphere. This may get his name in the media a lot but not in a positive fashion more often than not. Manley thinks he's King Shit, but he ain't shit quite yet. That's something he will have to learn quick.

Final Analysis

All in all, Chet Manley is a promising prospect who can be quite the asset for Helsinki. He has a lot of upside with a bit of a risk factor being the loose canon that he is. We consider him a 8C potential on the prospect rating scale.
