Cathy stepped into the penthouse apartment of New York Americans' center Essian Ravenwing, bringing with her a cloth tote bag from the library. "Ess, I got you some books from work," she called from the cavernous foyer. Ravenwing called an incoherent response from a distant room before making his way toward the front door. After kissing Cathy on the cheek, Ravenwing took the bag from her and dumped its contents onto a nearby glass table. The books were all topical, ranging from Orwell's "1984" to Huxley's "Brave New World" to Sinclair Lewis' "It Can't Happen Here". Ravenwing smiled as he shuffled the stack around to see all of the selections. Cathy stepped up behind him and put an arm around his midsection. When he reached the bottom of the pile, Ravenwing stopped and frowned slightly, his eyebrows drawing down toward his nose, causing deep furrows in his forehead.

"What's this one?" he asked, hefting the bottom book.

"Oh, that's something new, just came in," Cathy responded. "Early reviews are overwhelmingly positive, and I thought with all the heavy classic reading, it might be good to have a little bit of modern fiction to break it up a bit."

Ravenwing flipped the book over and read some of the critical praise comments, then read the inside flap of the front cover. "The Case of Jackson Nightshade," he muttered when he finished.
