S54 VHL Draft Eligible Goalies

www.VHLHockeyNews.com

With almost 20 games into the season, we've had the chance to get an early look at the S54 draft eligible goaltenders and certain there are quite a few interesting choices here to choose from.

Markus King – Brampton Blades

Top ranked VHLM goalie going into this VHLM season, King has everything you'd like in a goaltender. Size, reflex, athleticism and hunger. Unfortunately things have not been going as well for him as expected. Along with the 1st overall pick in the VHLM, Marc-Alexandre Leblanc and 2nd overall pick, Aleksei Federov, the Blades have been struggling to stay above 0.500 this season despite being one of the best teams in the league in shot suppression. With that being said, King's numbers have been underwhelming to the say the least. Last in save percentage with 86.9% and only middle of the pack in goals against average, suffice to say King has a vast amount of potential and it may only be a matter of time before he fully realizes it. As of currently he still remains a top pick in the coming draft.

Vernon Von Axelberry

4th ranked VHLM prospect is Axelberry, currently playing for Oslo Storm. Good and bad for him, the Storm are barely hanging onto a playoff spot in the VHLM as they are one of the worst teams defensively as they come. With a record of 3-11-1, Axelberry has seen the second most shots in the league but has done well enough to warrant some extra looks. Sporting a 90% save percentage despite a GAA that reflects the 2nd worst team in the league, Axelberry has certainly raised his possible potential outlook. There were certainly doubts about his ability to play under pressure, but that seems to be a distant thought now. If Axelberry continues to improve, he could have the makings of a star goaltender. Considering his draft ranking, he may prove to be a steal in the draft.

Torstein Ironside

A rank riser in the draft. Ironside is quickly establishing himself as a top goalie prospect. Playing with the Saskatoon Wild has certainly help scouts look him up as the Wild are one of the top contending teams this season in the VHLM and Ironside has been a large part of it. With a 90.7% sav percentage and the second most wins (10) for any goalie in the league, Ironside is showing himself to be a great pick for the Wild in the late part of the round. Big and agile, Ironside has one of the best glovehands in the league and shows flashes of dominance. He could prove to be a late bloomer and with the speed of his growth, could challenge for being one of the top goalie picks in the coming draft.

Alexander Wolfe

Wolfe projects to be a future VHLM starter with upside as a quality backup in the VHL but has a long ways to go if he is to achieve that. His development has definitely been hampered at this time with the lack of training hours as a result of him not being able to attend training, but the foundation is there should he wish to improve upon it. Despite being behind the strongest defence in the league, Wolfe has not been able to maintain a save % above 0.900. While he does have 5 wins to his name, he will need to prove to the league that he can be relied upon in key situations.

Arthan Lawrence

Being on a team is never easy and Lawrence has had to play his mind out in order to stay on the roster. So far he has seen just 3 games with Ottawa while fighting for a starter spot with Wolf and Jacob. Despite this, he has been determined to fight for the starter spot. In his 3 games he has played incredibly well to the tune of 91.7% save and a 1.00 GAA. Lawrence seems to have the foundation to become a VHL goaltender, but in either a backup or starting position, we are still unsure. He is certainly very raw but does have the outside chance of becoming a starter in the VHL eventually.

Revan Gotze

As the starting goaltender for Bern, Gotze position is not enviable. Not only is he on the worst team in the league, he has also shown little if any potential to reach the VHL. At this time, he may only be able to backstop VHLM teams and even then he isn't considered one of the best in the league. At this current time it is unlikely for him to get much better it seems unless he gets his mind back together.
