The Victory Hockey League’s Season 54 Draft takes place tonight and we already are much of the way through the draft.  This week, STZ is taking a free week and therefore I want to get this in to get some TPE and write about some topical information.

This week’s article for me will focus on some of the biggest surprises thus far in the S54 Draft.  Perhaps I will be proven wrong on some of these but I could end up right at times as well, but either way they make for some interesting conversation and that is what this league needs more of.  So therefore, lets look at some of the biggest surprises that have happened thus far:

1st Overall – Helsinki Titans select Hudson Abbott (D)

The Helsinki Titans decided to make sure that they would acquire their number one target when they traded the third overall pick, seventeenth overall pick and Jim Lahey for the first overall selection.  It seemed like a no-brainer move by the Legion who were going to get the goalie they wanted anyway, but it was a bit surprising to see the Titans jump at the opportunity to secure that top pick.  It was even more surprising when they selected Hudson Abbott.  This isn’t to say that Bushito isn’t a deserving top pick.  Frankly, he is right there as one of the best skaters in the draft, alongside the likes of Federov, Yu, Gretzky, Pablo and Schmeckeldorf, but I don’t think anyone had him pegged for that top selection.  Well nobody except for the Helsinki Titans.  The Titans have decided to go with the outspoken Tyler Barabash, whose last two players both were marked by him leaving early, but that doesn’t seem to concern them given this extreme amount of confidence that is clearly displayed through this move.

2nd Overall – Quebec City Meute select Fook Yu (F)

I shouldn’t be surprised that TFong went so early.  In fact, I find he always underrates his players anjd then makes elite talents that earn quite a bit of TPE by the end of their career.  He did this when I drafted Xin Xie Xiao and he became one of the best two-way forwards in league history.  Nevertheless, I wondered if he would fall a bit given his reliance on welfare, but once again his reputation not just for making great players, but being a tremendous teammate and member, stood out far more than anything else.  Fook Yu should be a really solid presence for the Meute and adds to an already solid young group there that could start making gains this year in the North American Conference.

6th Overall – Seattle Bears select Vernon Von Axelberry (G)

I’m stunned..not that they took a goalie but that Axelberry went before Markus King.  Then again, I’m guessing Kendrick didn’t want to be a member of the Bears and perhaps made that known.  Additionally, I imagine that Robbie had some real interest in Seattle and if he meets or even surpasses expectations, he will be a good building block for the Bears going forward.  I am curious going forward if he gets up to his typical Robbie shenanigans which could be real stressful for Bana going forward given the importance of goaltending to a squad.  That would be my only concern taking Robbie.  Other than that, he’s a great member and while I would take Kendrick’s player before him, I imagine Bana had some legitimate reasons why he did not go with King at six.
