Torstein Ironside: Tough Beginnings

After a very strong VHLM showing, Torstein Ironside was known to have a bright future. In the VHL Entry Draft, the Toronto Legion selected him 3rd overall, and there were many wondering how he would perform in his first VHL season. Well, he has been pretty inconsistent so far.

Coming out of the gates, Ironside won all of his first three VHL games. Let's take a look at those performances.

Game 5 vs. Bears

Torstein Ironside did not put on a great showing here in his VHL debut, although he did get the win. The Legion won 4-3 in a shootout, carried by a hat trick by VHL veteran Vincent Adultman. KYLO sealed the deal for Toronto in the shootout, but Ironside's stats were lacking. He only saved 15 of 18 shots, for a save percentage of 83.3%. Things could have been a lot better for him.

Game 6 vs. Reign

In this game, after having a bad showing, Ironside wanted to turn things around. He did just that, saving 28 of 29 shots, for a save percentage of 96.6%. The only player to score a goal on Ironside was Riga's David Hamilton, who ended Torstein's shutout bid at 8:54 in the 3rd period. The Legion won that game 3-1 in a very back and forth affair.

Game 9 vs. Bears

Well, this was another game against the Seattle Bears, a team on the same path as Toronto. Ironside saved 19 of 21 shots, while Seattle played their backup goaltender SEA G. With a 90.5% in the save column, the Legion went on to win this game 3-2 with a good 3rd period. Sterling Archer and TOR LW1 scored twice in the final frame, tying and then putting the Legion up by one to win it.

As you can see, his first three games weren't the greatest. Inconsistencies all around. Let's take a look at some of his more recent games.

Game 43 vs. Wranglers

This game featured two teams in the middle of a rebuild, with both teams more or less building around a strong netminder. Torstein Ironside in Toronto, and Jacob in Calgary dueled it out. The first period went as expected, with both teams swapping goals. Roman Sokolov opened the scoring on a power play, then Calgary tied it up with a goal by CGY LW1. It wasn't until all the way in the beginning of the 3rd that Toronto took the lead. Pavel Varushkin brought the Legion up by one, and that 2-1 score held up until the final buzzer. Torstein Ironside saved 19 of 20 shots, saving 95%. Jacob held Calgary in this game saving 34 of 36 pucks on goal.

Game 49 vs. Meute

In this game, the Quebec City Meute were very heavily favoured to win. Torstein Ironside tried to have something to say about that, but they ultimately lost in a game they should have been blown out. The Legion actually opened the scoring in the 1st period, where Vincent Adultman put them up by one. Although, Meute players Pierre Gaudette and Fabio Jokinen each scored before the end of it all, giving Quebec City the 2-1 lead, which became the final score. The Meute dominated this game, but Ironside saved 53 of 55 shots, saving 96.4%. As mentioned, this game could have, and should have been a lot worse for the Legion, but Torstein made it look better on paper.

At this moment, with only 8 games played for Torstein Ironside, he has a record of 4-4-0. With a save percentage of 90.4%, and a goals against average of 3.34, that just isn't going to cut it. Sure, this is to be expected of a goaltender playing on a rebuilding team, but Ironside is not happy with it. He is getting killed against the big VHL teams, while having okay games against the teams they are on a more even level with. Although, every goaltender goes through their growing pains, so Ironside shouldn't stay sad.

Welcome to the world of goalie, it's a weird place. Fact is that consistency with a goaltender in STHS is more or less a myth. Best you can hope for is some strong games to boost your numbers a bit. I had 5 straight shutouts and then a .800 game, it happens.
