scoop 3,432
The draft lottery may have not been in favor of the Meute, staying at fourth overall, but the results of the semi-finals could not have gone any better as far as their draft position is concerned. After defeating Quebec in the first round of the playoffs, the New York Americans went on to face the Calgary Wranglers. A personal favorite team of mine, I would not have minded seeing New York beat Calgary in this series. The Americans fell quickly into a 1-3 deficit in the series, but they managed to claw back to bring things to a Game 7. In the end, Calgary did win the series. For Quebec, this was a fantastic result, as they hold New York's first and second round picks in the upcoming draft. Quebec acquired New York's S62 1st Round Pick in the David Kiaskov trade this past off-season. The Americans were looking for more help during the season, and the Meute obliged, sending Lavar Ball to New York to acquire their S62 2nd Round Pick. Thanks to New York's exit in the semi-finals, these picks will be 5th and 13th overall. In the other semi-final matchup, Helsinki was pitted against Davos. The Titans lead the series 3-1 after four games, just like the Wranglers did. However, the Titans blew their lead, losing three straight games. While Quebec didn't have as much riding on this series as the other one, it was a nice treat for them to see Davos come out victorious, as they hold Helsinki's S62 2nd Round Pick. (Additionally, Davos is my second favorite franchise, so I'm certainly rooting for them to win the upcoming Game 7 against Calgary!) Quebec acquired this pick last season in a deal for veteran Lukas Muller. The Titans ended up winning the Cup last season, so it's hard to say the deal didn't work out for them, but Quebec is certainly happy to have gotten a second round pick in what looks to be a good draft for a rental player. While the best case scenario would have Quebec picking first, things at least didn't go as poorly as possible for them. Whether or not they hold onto all of their picks come draft time is another matter, but for now they hold five picks that could become active players. Here is the list of the S62 picks they have for the first two rounds. QUE 1st (4th overall) NYA 1st (5th overall) QUE 2nd (12th overall) NYA 2nd (13th overall) HSK 2nd (14th overall) Although Quebec finished closer to the bottom teams than the top of the pack, they are a team on the rise looking to become competitive possibly as early as next season. That being said, they may look to trade some number of these draft picks in order to acquire some veteran talent. While the 4th and 5th overall picks might be able to acquire VHL-ready players, those three second rounders would more likely be prospects that wouldn't take a season or two of development before they could make an impact. Quebec's core is still very young, though, so they aren't necessarily in a rush to make things happen. They could very well hold on to these picks and look to develop players for the future rather than try to trade for players. It could simply be a matter of what's out there. If they find a good deal for one or more of those picks, they may go ahead and make it. If they don't, that's not an issue. They shouldn't try to force a trade either way. As Quebec's youngsters continue to develop, the S62 Entry Draft could hold some more hope for the franchise that is hungry for a cup. The picks are there, now it's on management to make good use of them one way or another.
