D - Jeff Hamilton

Birthplace: Gerards Cross, England
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 205 lbs
Jersey Number: 68

Drafted: 2nd Overall - S46 (Seattle Bears)

Username: @sterling

With the 2nd Overall Selection in the S46 VHL Entry Draft, the Seattle Bears marked the beginning of a new era for a franchise that had missed the playoffs the previous two seasons, as well as three of the four seasons preceding this selection. In Jeff Hamilton, the younger brother of Phil Hamilton (S55 Class), the Bears were selecting a Franchise Defenceman, and one who was represented by the Sterling Agency, noted representatives of past Hall of Famers in Sterling Labatte (S10 Class), Grimm Jonsson (S18 Class), James Bencharski (S30 Class), Alexander Labatte (S36 Class), and Tom Slaughter (S45 Class). In fact, every single player the Sterling Agency has ever managed, has been inducted into the Hall of Fame, so it was no surprise when, in Season 57, Jeff Hamilton received the call to the Hall as the 6th member of the vaunted Sterling Agency!

In the new era of the VHL, rare are the days you see a prospect step in and hold their own, especially on a team that finishes with only 4 wins over the course of a 72-game season. Such was the case for Hamilton, as he stepped right into the Seattle roster, and put up a 40-point rookie season, from the blue-line. On a team that scored only 116 goals on the entire season, Hamilton's presence on 34.5% of his team's goals is a fantastic mark. To put that mark into context, had Seattle scored the league of 248 goals that season, Hamilton's pace would have seen him net a cool 85-points as a rookie defender. To say that was a sign of things to come would be an understatement! After an abysmal season on the lowly Bears, Hamilton was given the chance to show what he could really do, as he was selected to represent Team Europe on the International Stage. After putting up 7 points in 10 Round Robin games, he potted the winning goal in Europe's semi-final match, en-route to capturing the Gold Medal!

After their disastrous Season 46, Seattle decided it was time to shake things up, trading their top pick, 2nd overall, in the S47 Draft, along with a 2nd in the S48 Draft for Hall-of-Famer-to-be Sandro Clegane. With a team looking to make a name for itself, the Bears put together a solid season that saw them finish 2nd in the North American Conference, with Hamilton leading the way. For his part, Season 47 was a continuation of Hamilton's growth from the World Cup, as he managed to more than double his point output, with 81 that season. Jeff managed to reach his career high in goals, with 28, and scored more assists than points the previous season (53), while leading the team in points by 16 over his next closest teammate. In the playoffs, the team's lack of support caught up to them. While Hamilton put together a solid series against Calgary, with a goal and four assists, they were ultimately no match for the Wranglers, who beat the Bears in five games before bowing out in the 2nd round.

They say that sometimes, you take a step forward only to take two steps back. In Hamilton's case, Season 47 was two steps forward, while Season 48 was a single step back. After leading the Bears in scoring in Season 47, Hamilton fell to 4th on the Bears scoring list, his 70 points falling 21 shy of team leader Arcturus Mengsk. While it was not quite up to par with the remainder of his career (Season 48 was, by far, his worst non-rookie season, offensively), he still did manage to put up nearly a point per game in the regular season and top his previous season's assist totals with 56. After a grueling 7-game series victory over New York, in the first round of the playoffs, the young Bears were unable to topple the impending dynasty that was the Season 48-50 Toronto Legion. After his season ended, Hamilton was once again tapped for International duty, representing Europe at the Season 48 World Cup. With the returning Gold Medalists looking set to be a contender to repeat, Hamilton and the Europeans made it all the way back to the Final, where they were unable to solve Scandinavian goaltender Sven Wolf, and lost 2-0, capturing the Silver Medal.

Looking for a bounceback season, Hamilton got off to a fantastic start with the Bears, notching 39 points through the first 36 games of the season. Once the mid-way point of the season hit, the Bears, looking to start a re-tool, moved Hamilton to the eventual Victory Cup Champs, the Quebec Meute. After the trade, Jeff only got better, finishing his season with Quebec by scoring 9 goals and 36 assists, for 45 points in 36 games. Those numbers were good enough to finish 2nd, behind older brother Phil, with 84 points on the season, while once again hitting the 20-goal plateau, and setting a 3rd straight career high in assists, with 64! Unfortunately for Hamilton, and the Meute, the playoffs brought with them the juggernaut that was the Toronto Legion, as the Legion marched through the Quebec side in five games. For his part, Hamilton had a solid offensive contribution, with 5 assists in the 5 games, but, ultimately, it was not enough.

With the first half of his career in the books, the bulk of it spent with Seattle, Hamilton had amassed a respectable resume, piling up 78 goals and 197 assists for a solid 275 points through his first 288 games. While a very respectable amount of points through half a career, Hall of Fame numbers they are not, and Season 50 would be another step towards cementing the legacy of Jeff Hamilton. In his first full season with the Meute, Hamilton once again set career highs in both points (87) and assists (66); the former also marking the lowest total for the remainder of his career, and the latter leading the entire league! His efforts on both ends of the ice were enough to claim Hamilton's first Sterling Labatte Trophy, then awarded to the VHL's top defender! With Hamilton patrolling the blue-line, and an all-star cast including three other Hall of Famers (Unassisted, Tom Lincoln and Aleksi Koponen), the Meute looked primed for a Continental Cup! After a quick sweep of the Calgary Wranglers, things looked to be falling into place for Hamilton to claim his first Continental Cup. Unfortunately, for the third consecutive season, his team ran into the Toronto Legion. The Victory Cup Champions dispatched the Meute in 6 games en route to their 3rd Championship win. With the bitter taste of defeat still in his mouth, Hamilton headed to the World Cup for a third stint representing Team Europe! There he had a fantastic Round Robin, scoring a point a game, as Europe finished tops among the group, receiving a bye to the Semi-Finals. There, after dispatching Team Mercenaries, Europe played a tightly contested game against Team World. Unfortunately for Hamilton, and the Europeans, a 4:15 flurry of offense in the 3rd period ended with the other side winning 2-1; the Europeans claimed their third medal in three years, a second Silver!

After 4 straight trips to the playoffs without a Continental Cup Finals appearance, Hamilton decided to give Europe a shot in Season 51. Signing with Riga in Free Agency, Jeff was determined to put everything he had into winning that elusive Cup! Putting up the highest assist and point total of his career, Hamilton also put forth a physical game never before seen from him, or after, as he laid a, by far, career high in hits, with 217, while also nearly doubling his career high in Penalty Minutes with 98. While his efforts ultimately were not enough to capture a second straight Labatte Trophy, Hamilton and his teammates were singularly focused on the Continental Cup. After a grueling 7-game series, where the Reign eked out a 2-1 Game 7 victory against brothers Phil and David, Jeff was destined to meet an old foe in the Continental Cup Final! With the Legion already having won an unprecedented three straight Continental Cups and looking to further cement their legacy after going up 3-2 in the series, and leading game 6 by two goals after the first period, Hamilton and the Reign would not give in. In Game 6, Hamilton was a key part of the come back, setting up the first goal for Riga and assisting on the eventual winner, as the Reign would knot the series at 3. In possibly the biggest game of his life, Hamilton would show up in a big way for Game 7! With 3 hits and 3 shot blocks, and having played 31 minutes already in a game that seemed destined to go into Overtime, Hamilton found twine with 24 seconds left on the clock, en route to winning his first, and only, Continental Cup!

While the saying goes "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em," Hamilton took those words in reverse. After finally getting over the "Toronto hump," and winning a Continental Cup, Hamilton decided that Europe was not for him, and signed with the Legion for Season 52, joining older brother Phil for a chance to win a Continental Cup together, before Phil was set to retire! While the numbers were not quite as good as his previous season, failing, for the first (and only) time in his career, to set a new career high in assists, Jeff's 88 points were good enough for second among defencemen, 5 back of the league leader - while also leading all defenders with 27 goals! While the Legion finished the season with 99 points, good enough for 5th Overall, the strong North American Conference had three teams finish with 106 points or more, meaning that Toronto was left on the outside, looking in, when the playoffs came around. With the disappointment of not even having a chance to repeat as Continental Cup Champion, Hamilton put up his worst World Cup Tournament of his career, scoring only 5 assists in the round robin, before Europe lost to Team World, yet again, this time in the Bronze Medal game - marking the only time in his career where Jeff Hamilton would not receive a Medal at the World Cup.

With his career winding down, and his stint in Toronto not going as expected, Jeff decided he would return home for his final season, which was also, arguably, his greatest! While leading all defenders in goals (28) and points (101), Hamilton captured the second Labatte Trophy of his illustrious career, as the Bears cruised to the top of the standings with 118 points! Unfortunately for Hamilton, the story of his playoff was the same as so many of his previous runs - after receiving a first-round bye, the Bears held home-ice advantage against an upstart New York squad. After quickly falling into the hole, 3-0 in the series, the Bears battled valiantly to make a series of it, pushing the Americans to Game 7. While the Bears would jump out to an early 2-0 lead, the Americans would tie the game up in the 2nd period and scored early in the Overtime frame en-route to repeating as Continental Cup Champions. It marked a disappointing end to an incredible career that saw Hamilton tally well over a point per game, and average over 25 goals per season as a blue-liner!

Career Overview

Hamilton was an offensive beast from the blue-line, finishing among the top point producing defenders in all but his rookie season. While his post-season and tournament stats aren't what you would expect from a Hall of Fame defender, the extensive Regular Season resume, upon which careers are formed, casts no shadow of a doubt as to why Hamilton is yet another in the long line of Sterling Agency Hall of Famers! The ability to blend that offense with a strong defensive game gave Hamilton the total package that all defencemen dream of, and only few can lay claim to having the ability. He only won a single Continental Cup in his career, but his Cup Winning Goal will live on forever!

With the Sterling Agency currently approaching a 10-season hiatus, their, potentially, final contribution to the Victory Hockey League was a fantastic one, a player who averaged over 25 goals and nearly 60 assists per season, and whom will forever be enshrined in the VHL Hall of Fame, never to be forgotten!
