With Vasteras failing to make the playoffs, the criticism they received in response to their mid-season trade for Keiji Toriyama has seemingly been justified. The Iron Eagles were actually in a playoff position when they made the trade, but Cologne passed them in the standings. Now the Iron Eagles only have one more guaranteed season with Keiji Toriyama, who they gave up a first round pick and more to acquire. Possibly even worse for them, Toriyama is not currently thinking about the final season of his current contract, but rather the three seasons that will follow it. Here's a quote:

"I already know where I would like to be playing after Season 38, assuming they will have me. I plan on signing for minimum, so I hope they can fit me on the team. I want to sign my final three seasons over to them."

Toriyama did not give any clues as to which team it was that he wants to sign with, perhaps because he fears it may bring about tampering accusations. But, despite frequents cries of tampering, the VHL has not issued many punishments for it.

Because Toriyama has already made up his mind about who he wants to play for, that means Season 38 won't be a season for him to prove his worth in an effort to attract attention for his impending free agent status. This could be bad for Vasteras, who hope to continue to improve.
