The Swiss Cowboy

Davos, Switzerland--- After stepping off the plane in Toronto, Ontario, Yukon Rush starting Goalie Rhett Stoffiday received some startling news:

He had been traded to a team in Central Europe.

The Tennessee-born Goalie, who spent last season in the Yukon Territory, is now setting up roots in Davos, Switzerland. He is the new backup to the backup, supporting both Arvid Aamo, and former VHLM rival, Cole Mertz.

“Y’know, I’m just happy to be here. The team is great, and while I was a little sad that I got traded from Toronto, After seeing the reasoning behind it, I think it’s going to be an amazing move for my career.” Stoffiday would remark.

It’s been a long road, with Stoffiday being drafted 22nd overall in the Season 63 VHL Draft to the Legion. He gets to spend one more season with the heavily stacked Yukon Rush as their sole goalie, hopefully making it straight to the championship. He was flying high and smiling all the way.

Then, in a trade that left many scratching their head, Stoffiday, along with two picks were traded to Davos in exchange for some of Davos’ veteran players. He found out via text.

“My buddy Ryan Kastelic let me know over text message. It was a pretty big shocker to be honest. I reckoned I’d be staying in Canada the rest of my career. That being said, I think I’m where I need to be, and I’m only just getting started!”

Stoffiday, with his deep southern drawl and charm, has raised some eyebrows around Davos. While many residents speak English, Stoffiday does not speak any of the languages of the region, but is eager to learn.

“I reckon I’ll be here a while, so I better start learning the languages. I bought Rosetta Stone, so I believe I’ll be working on that for a while.” Stoffiday would laugh.

This season, Stoffiday will remain at his home in Yukon, finishing his final season in the VHLM, but will fly to Davos for team activities, or if called up. The big move will happen during the off-season, in preparation for Season 64.

“It’s going to be mighty hard to be so far away from family, but a lot of my buddies are over here in Europe playing, so I don’t reckon I’ll be too lonely.”

That’s not all that happened for Stoffiday this off-season! During a visit to Vegas, Stoffiday married his long time fiancé Francesca in a private ceremony. Joseph McWolf, Ryan Kastelic and Alexander Pepper were groomsman. The bachelor party included a trip to a petting zoo, and to visit the set of Pawn Stars, where the boys helped the cast accurately price some of their memorabilia.

With so much action the last few weeks, it’s strange that Stoffiday has anything left.  He smiles because he knows that he is exactly where he needs to be.
